What does it say about the collective wisdom of the American
people when a certified con man, liar, draft evader and idiot like George Bush is preferred by our electorate and media over an intelligent patriot like Al Gore?

1. You used the I-word!
Our country doesn't trust intelligent or learned people.

2. Gore got the majority of the votes
and he wasn't the strongest candidate the Dems have ever fielded. Call me naive, but I do not think we Americans are as dumb as a lot of people seem to think. The elitists who think that are doing nothing to help the Democrats. In fact, it has the opposite effect.

5. I'd agree
I'd also say the people didn't know how bad things would get; the misunderestimated Mr. Bush assuming he would be more or less a haircut. Turns out he's a haircut with a vengence or something like that.

4. As HL Mencken said
"It is impossible to over-estimate the stupidity of the American people."

6. I dont think
we want to introduce the concept of literacy tests. If the US was truly homogenous so that there would be no racial or ethnic impact, an ideal for a functioning democracy might be the ability to pass the functional equivalent of a high school civics exam when registering to vote. Right now a literacy test would hurt us more than help us because we need every vote we can get from the illiterate and uneducated to offset the votes they get from the biased and ill-educated.

9. stupid, ignorant, jingoistic
a fair number of insane religious zealots, and completely trained to salivate when the TV tells them to.

Mostly, it tells me that now that 50%+ of people have been made apathetic that it takes surprising few sheep to infect the whole flock.
