4. Taking a page from Anne Richards' campaign book
In Richards' first Texas campaign for Governor, the gun crowd spread the word that she was a 'gun-grabber.' Richards had her picture taken for the front page of the Houston Chronicle and the Dallas Morning News. In the picture, she was duck-hunting, and had a 12-gague cradled in her arms. No story, short caption, just the pic.

She won.

10. Yeah, but consider her oponent, Will.
The gun pic didn't hurt but she mostly won because Clayton Williams was suicidally stupid and couldn't keep his damn fool mouth shut.

Don't get me wrong. I'm the biggest Ann Richards fan you'll ever meet and was delighted she won. I'm just realistic that if her Rethug challenger had had two brain cells to rub together to spark off a thought she probably woulda been toast.

23. commonly used GW (George Washington)...while JFK is forbidden
to be used for John F. Kerry...forbidden by the bush* minions, especially KKKarl rove, who came out swinging about it....

yet, for a LONG time, the chimp doesn't use GB, or GWB, but rather GW (which used to mean George Washington to most Americans)...in fact, KKKarl rove has INSISTED on GW, first claiming it was just to differentiate the little chimp from his father, but later actually putting out info and comparing GW the chimp to the GREAT George Washington...

one day, DUers and others will wake up to the slimy reTHUGlican tactics....

there is NO REASON to eliminate John F. Kerry's initials...we should be PROUD of BOTH John F. Kerry and John F. Kennedy and make NO APOLOGIES for it....

When my daughter says "I can't be a politician, 'cuz I'm a girl" I tell her about Ann Richards. If she could grow up to be just like Ann, then I've done my job right.

25. Referring to Kerry as JFK just gives me an odd sense of...
...forboding...or something. I can't quite pin the feeling down. Couple that with the picture the other day where it appears that a shotgun is against Kerry's head and I really get the creeps.

I saw a photo in a private collection the other day of Bobby Kennedy that made me feel the same way. It is a side shot of a crowd from about thirty feet away. All of the crowd is facing forward but Bobby has turned almost all the way around to fully face the camera, that I am sure he is unaware of. The look on his face almost shows that he is aware that he will not live out the week.

20. Ohhhh...so now...you also do not like 'cutesie' names, i.e. KKKarl rove...

well B.B., everyone has initials and especially if it's their REAL name, then they have every right to use their own initials...and not many feel that KKKarl rove is 'cutesie', or rise up to defend KKKarl rove here on DU...

that "JFK's dead" is an old rush limbaugh rant, and I encourage everyone to reject "rush the heroin addict"...

the attitude and DEMANDS that John F. Kerry never use HIS OWN INITIALS comes out of the radical religiously-insane right wing....it does not affect many DUers...we simply don't follow KKKarl rove's orders....

the initials JFK suite John F. Kerry very well...it's time that DUers stopped following KKKarl rove's talking points and marching orders...why does g.w.b. get to use his initials, while JFK doesn't?

17. So what? The current pResident is George Bush.
But most people say "George W. Bush" to distinguish him from his father. I don't like using "JFK" for Kerry even if they are his real initials. Kerry is not John F. Kennedy reincarnate, and I don't mean that as a slam on Kerry. I happen to think of him as his own person, and I think it cheapens him to constantly compare him to another -- especially against an assassinated president who is an icon for many. Not all presidents go by their initials anyway. TR, FDR, JFK, and LBJ were some of the few who did. I'll stick with "John Kerry."

22. soooo, gwb can use his initials, but JFK is FORBIDDEN, even here on DU

seems odd to me...so many come out swinging to ruin a very nice PHOTO of John F. Kerry (initials JFK)...just to defend the chimp's right to use his initials...AND FORCE everybody to follow the KKKarl rove talking point "NOBODY CAN EVER USE JOHN F. KERRY's INITIALS"

KKKarl rove: "VERBOTEN !" no John F. Kerry initials...."VERBOTEN"...you must follow the command...you only have permission to say 'JFK is dead', that is what YOU WILL SAY and write..as ordered by KKKarl rove...

26. No, it's not forbidden.
How can I forbid anyone from using "JFK" for John Kerry? I was simply expressing my opinion about why I think it's not a good way to refer to him. I don't see how my comment ruins the picture.

There is no confusion when people say "GWB", because his father is "GHWB." But "George Bush" is ambiguous and that's why you don't hear it as often. When someone says "JFK," I don't automatically know who that is referring to anymore. It's common to specify a first name (or initials) for presidents who share their surname with another. For example, we say John Adams and John Quincy Adams, Andrew Johnson and LBJ, TR and FDR, Benjamin Harrison and Wm. Henry Harrison, etc. I think the same should hold true for initials.

Not only is it confusing, it is also likely to cause resentment. If George W. Bush's name were "Francis David Robertson", I would deeply object to him using the appellation "FDR" even if those are his real initials. Many people would not like seeing Kerry replace Kennedy as "JFK." And I don't think it is a Rove talking point that Kerry cannot use "JFK." I think the real Rove talking point is that Kerry is trying to use "JFK" to ride on Kennedy's coattails. The Kerry campaign is not using "JFK," so why should we?

34. chimp uses GW (= George Washington), while Kerry cannot use JFK???

:wtf:

People call the chimp GW, and now, KKKarl rove is using the comparison to George Washington all the time...there is even a post up higher on this thread referring to "GW" (George Washington), which was NEVER used for bush* EVER until his pResedential campaign...in FACT, bush* ran in Texas totally under the name 'george bush' and the polls showed that MOST people voted for him, because they thought he was the senior bush*, who had just won the gulf war....

so why are we intimidated by KKKarl rovian tactics and spin? why do we follow as ordered by KKKarl rove?....John F. Kerry recently wrote an editorial published in the WP under his full name: John F. Kerry....he signs his name like that and frequently initials JFK....there is no reason at all to fear or comply with KKKarl rove...and certainly, resentment will mostly come from reTHUGlicans, while the initials will help voters connect to his name....name recognition is one of MOST IMPORTANT parts of a campaign...look at arnold schwartznegger to learn that lesson....

IMO, John F. Kerry is PROUD to have the initials: JFK....gosh, reTHUGlicans are still stunned that Camelot and Kennedy and Jackie became ICONS...the whole Kennedy clan has been TRASHED by reTHUGlicans for years, and scandalized and tormented....

STAND UP: say it LOUD AND CLEAR and be proud....John F. Kerry...JFK...soon-to-be President of the United States of America !

John Forbes Kerry may be a Catholic Senator from Massachusetts, but he is certainly no Jack Kennedy.

Kerry = J.F.K.? Nah ... more like L.B.J.

(on edit: The headline "JFK at the Shooting range (Photo)" is somewhat amusing, in a very dark way. I half expected to see a presidential motorcade in Dallas.)
