Repub says there will be no vote today.

6. Santorum just suggested
Edited on Mon Jul-12-04 12:13 PM by Freya
they are going to try and amend the resolution to get it to pass.

Reid is now attacking them for trying to do that. Says the senate has more important things to do. Says they want the issue "not a resolvement on the issue"

Says repub strat is to say dems wouldn't let them vote. Says they will let them vote. Asking why they would bring something to the floor they want to change now.

Says kerry and edwards want a vote. Says they want to know WHEN the vote will be so kerry and edwards can vote. Says repubs made Kerry waste a whole day their for nothing the other day.

108. If this is the most important issue the senate has, me thinks the senate
needs to take a HUGE pay cut and be replaced with more serious senators who are well informed that our economy is in the dumps, unemployment is high, children are starving and can't afford health care, gas prices are too high, housing is too high, slums are growing, the division of classes is increasing, elderly, and so on and so on. This senator needs to be voted out!

115. I hear ya terrya
Santorum ran these ads featuring his wife and 6 kids in his last re-election bid. A lot of people are such fools that they voted for him because those ads portrayed him as such a great family man. I had a big argument over him with my dad.

Now I tell my dad of every vote that Santorum makes that hurts HIM and his kids and grandchildren. I also had a very biting LTTE which highlighted Santorum's hypocrisy published a while back.

Santorum has to go. I wish that Chris Heinz would run against him.

33. Thomas Frank
This is an example of what he's talking about.

Traditional marriage is a great foundation. Gay marriage will crumble not only families, but American civilization.

They never mention the reason families are not what they used to be, are that most of the time, both parents have to work long hours just to get by. So family time slides to the back burner.

It's only gay marriage that will tear at the heart of America. It's got nothing to do with working longer hours, for less wages, and having no time for your family.

If it's not said, nobody will think of it. Out of ear, out of mind(or so to speak). Don't worry about working longer everyone. Gay marriage is the reason your family isn't a family.

This is the culture war Thomas Frank writes about. We're all watching it as it happens.

between gay marriage and children born out of wedlock. You could find any number of events that occurred simultaneously and claim (wrongly) that one caused the other.

This is either complete idiocy or abject dishonesty.

Santorum is vile. His money-grubbing, corporate-whoring legislative actions are impacting marriages and hurting families all over this country. I HATE these bible-thumping sanctimonious hypocrites. Remember this is the good "Christian" who wanted to cut funding for child care for working welfare mothers. He said it was good for people to "struggle".

Yeah, Rick tell us how children left at home alone strengthens families.

Also - please go to www.hrc.org and email your congress people from that site and sign the petition. They are trying to get a million signatures and 500,000 emails.

The ACLU will let you send a free FAX to your congress people at www.aclu.org as well.

Let's send a message to congress.

Santorum is an idiot! Marriage already has no meaning to many. How many divorces are granted each year? Sheesh!!!

And what are the "consequences to America" that will result from same-sex marriage? I just don't get this.

My 30-year marriage isn't threatened by our gay friends getting married. Their family will be strengthened by this, not harmed.

84. and there it is
if the states don't march lockstep with Bush and his thugs in congress, the thugs will act to override the constitutionally granted powers of the state

So states rights are good..as long as they are in keeping with "traditional" states rights...but no states rights if they don't.

it not only serves a right wing agenda of social control and cultural indoctrination...it sets a constitutional precedent (with an admendment) for exercising control over the rights relegated to the states. It rewrites the constitution in more ways than one..

90. Faulty, faulty argument
The Republicans can's simply override the powers of the states at will. Obviously, the states have to vote to support the amendment.

Liberals, up this point, have shown no support for states rights. As a party, we would prefer for the judiciary to override majorities in those states who do not support gay marriage.

I personally support gay marriage; yet I do not support allowing the judiciary to simply impose its will on it every state when it comes to issues of moral preference. It sets a dangerous precedent.

but they can threaten and often do

and how many states already ban same sex marriage..and how many plan on having a ban on their ballots this year?

Republicans only like "states rights" when the rights of the states mean only the things they want it to mean

I support equal rights for all. I don't want ANYONE intruding upon that. FMA is nothing more than discrimiantion dressed up as family values.

and if this country believed in equal rights, the states wouldn't be able to get away with discriminating against gays and lesbians....but they are

a dangerous precident is to allow a whipped up majority to subjigate a minority.
Civil rights would NEVER have occured if Johnson hadn't simply bullied it through against the will of alot of people. But it was simply the right thing to do.
I'm listening to the debate via streaming from the CSPAN site, and it is breaking my heart.

98. Not really
While it takes a majority of states to ratify, what about the minority of states that don't ratify? The federal government will then dictate to those individual states. Do you want your state laws written by fundamentalists in the deep south? This is exactly where this is headed: THAT is the 'dangerous precedent'.

I certainly don't prefer the judiciary to override majorities. I prefer that people become educated, less bigoted, more open as a society. We'll get there.

He just believes that his gay 'friends' should be used as pawns every four years for political gain. He just believes that he should whip up the public to view their fellow Americans as the big ol' boogey man who threatens their very way of life, whether it be civilian or military issues. He just believes in throwing his gay 'friends' to the wolves so his war-crime pResident can further divide this country.

Don't confuse how right wingers define "states rights" with the Constitutional fact that powers and rights have been relegated to the states. Abuse of power doesn't mean the power itself is bad.

116. Question asked: Can not the SCOTUS proclaim FMA unconstitutional?
Answer:Yes

federal constitution trumps state constitutional

"SCOTUS has indicated they would call state constitutional amendments to ban "gay" marriage unconstitutional..making it the law of the land."

unless FMA passes and is ratified. Speaker defending why FMA must pass.

Blaming "activists" judges

"the power of 'unelected' judges"

lol the idiot (Sessions) is now knocking the SCOTUS that put his boy into office.
