1. Copped a deal. 20 years prison. Gov. did not want too much scandal,
parents did not want to take risks.

6. Ashcroft & FBI screwed the case BIG time..
Even a friendly judge couldn't save them. Eventually they had to give up on 9 of 10 charges and took a plea. Book out "Getting Away with Murder" IIRC has lots of details.

4. Totally railroaded into jail. If he'd had been in Iraq he would be free.
This dopey kid was betrayed by his "lawyers". No way he should have taken a plea.

7. His attorney spoke at the ACLU convention this year-- still available on
webcast, I believe: http://www.aclu.org/2004memberconf/

Nadine Strossen moderates a discussion with Stanford Law School Dean Kathleen Sullivan, Frank Dunham of the Federal Public Defenders Office and the attorney for Yaser Hamdi, and trial attorney James Brosnahan who represented John Walker Lindh.

He indicated that since the abuses/torture at Abu Ghraib have come out, that he'd gotten many calls from journalists re: Lindh's mistreatment, but I have yet to see any articles.

8. Yeah, and this was well before Abu Ghraib.

Looks like torture was SOP.

9. Witness protection program
After reading Good Muslim/ Bad Muslim, I suspect quite strongly that he was a CIA operative. We had the CIA over there training the Taliban for years, and his inconspicuous disappearance leads me to believe that he in fact was most likely a CIA operative whose cover was blown and had to be transformed into the "American Taliban." Hell, the whole Taliban was funded, armed, and trained by the CIA.

12. Age?
The Agency approaches students of any age who are pretty fluid in Arabic. It happened to a friend of mine who, at the age of 19 had learned the language enough so that he could major in Middle East Studies.

13. Sure looks like he was tortured now
I don't suppose we will ever know the real truth. He might have confessed to anything. I wonder if his lawyers could file an appeal now that the torture pictures have come out. Surely that makes any evidence gathered questionable.
