As Marius said: "To the BARRICADES!" I feel patriotic. and rebellious
I read the news about John Edwards as veep and I am excited again. I had been very happy with Kerry as a strategic choice but Edwards adds some "rock & roll" and southern charm to the ticket. I think Bush and Cheney realize they've stepped in it now...they will stop at nothing to retain their throne.

Perhaps they see this as yet another "necessary change in the way America does things" in a post-9/11 world. Using this rationale, they can give excuses for why any previously unimaginable precedent could be set which would strip us of the very identity we hold as a free republic with our own will.

If I was a libertarian I would be hoot and hollerin' mad and talking about watering the tree of liberty with some rich politician's blood.

Thankfully, I'm not a libertarian so I say we should mass around NYC in common cause with the victims of 9/11 and in protest of all terrorism and all tyranny including state-sponsored terror in Iraq and Palestine and tyranny of the Patriot Act.

We must step up in throngs as "WE THE PEOPLE" to say with one voice a resounding, "NOOOOOOOOO!!! Never again!" and then vote with our might to vanquish the human stains who have marred our great country.

WHO IS WITH ME?!

1. Do you hear the people sing? Singing a song of angry men (and women)
Enjolras: Do you hear the people sing?
Singing the song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes!

Combeferre: Will you join in our crusade?
Who will be strong and stand with me?
Beyond the barricade
Is there a world you long to see?

Courfeyrac: Then join in the fight
That will give you the right to be free…

Chorus: Do you hear the people sing?
Singing the song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart?
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes!

Feuilly: Will you give all you can give
So that our banner may advance?
Some will fall and some will live
Will you come up and take your chance?
The blood of the martyrs
Will water the meadows of France!

Chorus: Do you hear the people sing?
Singing the song of angry men?
It is the music of a people
Who will not be slaves again!
When the beating of your heart
Echoes the beating of the drums
There is a life about to start
When tomorrow comes!

3. I love that song. Here's a story abot Les Miserables in NYC.
My wife and I schedule a trip to New York City right after 9/11. We bought tickets ahead for November and spent Thanksgiving in NY. We saw Macey's Thanksgiving Day parade and it was a very warm and beautiful time with thousands of "family members". I had never been so close to strangers emotionally as at that time.

We stayed at a hotel right next to a FDNY ladder company who had lost members of their crew at the WTC and we signed their guest book, got pictures, listened to stories.

We traveled to ground zero and saw what we could. It was very cleaned up compared to previous months but it still smelled of destruction.

Anyway, one of the last nights there we saw the Les Miserables Broadway production. I had read the book a couple of times and seen part of the 10th anniversary video recording with the all star cast...but seeing the production up close at that place and at that time...really made me feel so good.

It reaffirmed for me the struggle we must all take on to gain freedom and protect freedom. We must strive for personal happiness and loyalty/love of family and friends. We must bear up under heavy losses. We must sacrifice.

Well, this is what I'm saying brothers and sisters of the human race. We must hang together or we will surely all hang separately.

5. I have seen Les Miserables three time...
...and sobbed each time.

Sounds like you had a great visit to New York.

7. I hear you. NO MORE WAR!
what is interesting is the US is in a nearly unprecedented period of ascendancy as far as military power and economic force goes.

Since EU is still getting on track and Japan is mired in decade long recession and CHina is not quite an economic power house on par with other industrialized nations,

The US could be using their power for good to STOP conflicts. They could have delivered same ultimatums to Palestinians and Israelis to knock it off---or else. They could work in Africa to build stable societies.

Instead....it is all about the oil.
