THE RUSH EFFECT

Imagine never being able to change your mind, formulate a new perception, or voice a difference of opinion from the one you have been associated with for decades. Imagine being held captive by your own admissions, and being a slave to those who expect from you only what you have been giving them in the past. Imagine never being able to become a new person, or challenge an old belief that no longer works for you.
I call this form of personal slavery “The Rush Effect,” for it is most obvious in the form of right wing talk show pundits such as Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter and Michael Savage. This powerful effect keeps these commentators enslaved to a very narrow view of the world they live in, whether they like it or not, and causes them deep spiritual degredation.
Think about it. If you had millions of fans who expected you to hate a certain group of people, disparage a certain way of life, and dismiss a certain mode of thought, and you one morning woke up and felt completely different about said people, way of life and mode of thought, what would happen? For the Limbaughs, Coulters and Savages of the world, you could not tell anyone about your change in thinking, your new found sense of tolerance or acceptance, for if you did, your entire career would be at stake. Not to mention the millions of fanatics who just might take out their anger of betrayal upon your physical body.
What a way to live.
The Rush Effect does harm even staunch and die-hard liberals who refuse to ever open their minds to a conservative thought, yet most liberals are not so close-minded as to become slaves to a one-way street of existence. That is what it means to be liberal in the first place; to be open to change, even in your own life. The Rush Effect happens far more with right wing conservatives and religious fanatics who simply cannot get over their fear and ignorance and refuse to look facts and evidence in the eye. Instead, they continue to live as slaves to their illusions of what the world looks like, and should they ever dare to have a change of mind, or more importantly, of heart, it often brings them to their knees. Nothing brings this point home more than the undying allegiance of Republicans to a President who has continually lied and deceived even members of his own party in Congress. Yet, still they worship at his feet.
Those who choose to live by the sword will die by it, just as those who choose to live in a narrow tube of perception will be forced to remain inside that tiny, constricted tube for the rest of their lives unless they possess tremendous courage and a desire to overcome their own terrified egos. For those in the public eye, this becomes even more difficult when millions of people expect a certain response from you, and hundreds are making money off of that narrow-mindedness to boot.
Imagine Rush Limbaugh waking up one morning and realizing what an asshole he has been, and desiring nothing more than to become a good man, with a good heart who cares about the poor, the addicted and the downtrodden. He simply could not do it, even if he wanted to more than anything in the world. Why? Because he has set himself up for a life of being one way, and only one way, and his followers keep him firmly in check. Should he stray, he will lose his career, perhaps even his life, for those whom are betrayed by their “leaders” often respond in such violent ways. Look at Judas and Jesus.
Limbaugh, Coulter, Savage and those like them are stuck. They are slaves. They cannot escape the slavery of their own making. The Rush Effect.
No wonder they are such miserable people.

4. that's the one thing. future dystopias don't need a date at all
and a lot of it was based on things already in motion. history does tend to repeat itself - books like 1984 just show how bad it CAN get

3. A couple of things..
1/ As long as the river of cash flows, Rush and his ilk don't care what they have to say.

2/ They never change their public opinions because they've never beleived themselves anyway.

3/ It's show business. Look how long actors go on playing the same staid old characters as long as the cash keeps coming.

4/ If they had a conscience you would be right on the money.

That's my nickel's worth.
