Are we headed to Watergate II ? |
|
I think of all the unconstitutional and illegal acts by this Administration and how the Repubs just turn a blind eye to it. They did the same thing back in 1972. They ignored what was before their very eyes.
I recall friends that would simply shrug and smile when you tried to tell them about the break-in at the Watergate Hotel or the invasions into Cambodia or Nixon's other transgressions. They didn't believe it. They voted for Nixon. He would never do anything like that.
The same damn attitude is out there today. No one has been as obviously over his head and incompetent as George W Bush. But his supporters refuse to believe it. After all, they voted for him. He will protect America. He is decisive, they say.
Are we doomed to suffer through repeat of 1972 election before we will be able to get the truth? Will we have to impeach Bush for similar offenses and lies? Is that the direction we are headed? Are all Republican voters from Missouri? Do they have to be shown the bloody knife before they will believe there has been a crime committed?

There is one major difference now |
|
Well, two. One is we don't control Congress. The other is that during the Watergate hearings, good Republicans were just as anxious to get rid of Nixon as the Democrats were. And back then, the majority of the GOP was Moderate, not wingnuts. I hope they have their day but I am not all that optimistic.

5. The parallels are striking |
|
It makes the matter even worse when we realize that major investigations will not be completed until "after the election". The sad truth is that "after the election" may be too late.
Because I was on the periphery of Repub politics during the Watergate era, I didn't find it unlikely that the Watergate Burgulary was orchestrated from very high up. There were always rumors and "war stories" passed around to little people like me so I didn't find it hard to believe.

7. John Dean says we've gone FAR beyond Watergate. |
|
I just finished reading "Worse Than Watergate" and I agree with Dean's assessments about the crimes of the Bush Adminstration. Lying to Congress to get us into war is far worse than anything the Nixon Adminstration did. And that's scary, to put it mildly.

of at least two things that warrant an independent investigator that could get on bush's case the same way ken starr was on clinton's. one is - who leaked the identity of that cia agent, and two - is cheney illegally favoring halliburton.

9. It took a committed congressional review |
|
We do not have a congress that is committed to exposing serious crimes by this White House. Frankly, the GOP doesn't care what he did or will do as long as he remains in power to advance their plans to change the world and the country. You see, it used to be that Senators and Congressmen and Congresswomen were interested in serving the country and the constitution. No longer. It has become a game without rules.
Clearly, this administration has committed some serious crimes against the Constitution, however, they will never be addressed by the only institution that can address them - Congress. Sadly, when Kerry wins (if he wins), and if we get one of the two houses back, the Dems will be reluctant to retroactively investigate the Bush administration because the will want to move beyond that. They will play nice. Cheney will sneer and go on to manipulate the congress behind the scenes and Bush will retire to his ranch and make big money speaking to right-wing groups.
No...as long as the GOP controls all, there will never be another Watergate type of investigation of this administration.

Watergate investigation never would have occurred if there had been Pub control. The same would have been true of all the investigations.
