New Keillor book: "Homegrown Democrat ..."

coupla snips ...

"Republicans have perfectly nice manners, normal hair, pleasant smiles, good deodorants, but when it comes right down to it, you do not want them to be monitoring your oxygen tube or running your child's school. Like the hall of mirrors at the carnival, they are all about perceptions, the party of Personal Responsibility, which conceals enormous glittering malice and is led by brilliant bandits who are dividing and conquering the sweet land I grew up in. I don't accept this."

"Liberals stand for tolerance, magnanimity, community spirit, the defense of the weak against the powerful, love of learning, all American values worth conserving. The people who call themselves conservatives stand for tax cuts, and further tax cuts, annual tax cuts, the only policy they know. Cut taxes. Use the money you save to buy a gun and an attack dog to take with you when you drive the Hummer out of the security gate of Republicanville ..."

2. Keillor is a favorite
Edited on Tue Jul-13-04 12:09 PM by ewagner
He speaks to those Midwest values I adopted over 35 years ago and within which I found a full and happy lifestyle.

He pokes fun at all of us MidWesterners but especially my good friends from Minnesota but it is good natured. If Repubs want to talk about values, Keillor can put them to shame.

on edit; Be SURE to read the article and the other snippets. It's Democratic values at their best!!!!!

3. here's another
• "Faith is private. It demonstrates itself in good works and love of neighbors but it doesn't need to puff up and blow a horn and bang on kitchen pans. ... When you try to find the love of Christ at work in the Republican Party, it may take awhile. The Christian Coalition was a Republican outfit with about as much to do with the Christian faith as the Elks Club has to do with large hoofed animals."

That is awesome. And biblical, e.g. praying like the hypocrites in public versus praying where your Father sees you in secret.

GOP=God's Official Party, my foot.

4. One of the most eloquent and sane figures
For those of you who don't listen to "A Prairie Home Companion" on the radio, Garrison Keillor has
been speaking to progressive views regularly. Don't let the gentle humor and the mild delivery fool
you; he can rip someone a new orifice with the best of them.

For example, a few weeks back he mentioned the monstrous nature of those who entertain no self-
doubt. He didn't make direct reference to Bush but did refer directly to the Abu Ghraib prison scandal
and the notion of countenancing torture.

A few years back he mentioned that if you're a rich person, people are in a hurry to do things for you -
-- a privilege unavailable to the average prerson, particularly the poor. He speaks the truth and is one
of the best weapons against the hypocrisy, greed, coldness and power lust of the current rulers.
