2. I support abolishing all marriage and having civil unions for everyone
Then churches can perform marriages and if they choose to discriminate against anyone, no federal funds and no tax exemptions.

The state can't dictate who a church must marry. While I support the idea of gay marriage, I do not believe people have a right to force any church to go against it's conscience by methods of financial coersion. There will be plenty of churches who will be performing gay marriages. Why would anyone want to be married in one which had been forced to comply?
In addition to that many people who are not married in a church still prefer to be considered "married". I don't think they will appreciate you telling them they now have a civil union.

The state can't dictate who a church must marry.
The state falls under the equal opportunity clause..the church does not

While I support the idea of gay marriage, I do not believe people have a right to force any church to go against it's conscience by methods of financial coersion.

The public has no duty to finance discriminatory behavior

There will be plenty of churches who will be performing gay marriages. Why would anyone want to be married in one which had been forced to comply?

Why should their tax money go to funding them? How long would they get tax breaks if they barred black people or women or men?

Yes I do
(apparently not since the minute the state taxes a church there ceases to be separation)


The state can't dictate who a church must marry.
The state falls under the equal opportunity clause..the church does no(that is right and that is why the state can not dictate to any religion what they can do in regards to sacred ceremonies)

(churches don't generally barr people, it cuts down on the congregation. But they could if they wanted. The state still would not tax them since the constitution says it can not.)

(you are actually saying that someone who runs off to vegas is denying your rights? How about the people who aren't married in the church and support your right to be married?)

3. I fully support gay marriage, gay adoptions and Gay Day at Disney
I'm straight, but I don't see how gays getting married affects me at all. I do see that kids who are living in institutions are likely better off adopted by a committed gay couple than continuing to live in institutions.

Two guys at my church adopted a couple of young girls, about 10-12 year olds. The girls are so happy and secure in their home, they are always dressed really nicely and have their hair done, and there is just this obvious bond of love between them all. I'd rather see girls in this situation than in some youth facility, getting the crap beat out of them by other girls, never developing the ability to love and respect a parental figure, and not having a normal life that includes a house, talking on the phone to friends, hanging out at people's houses, grabbing food from the fridge, etc. Why do fundies hate children so much, that they think they'd be better off in institutions than with loving, caring adults?

10. In Florida, I'm not even allowed to adopt a child....
But they lose track of individual kids for months, and the foster care system has a horrible record.

Fundies hate children, but they just love fertilized eggs.

:( and it's the only state that doesn't allow a gay person (single or coupled) to adopt.

29. Come to Michigan, we've got lots of kids.
You have to adopt as a single adult, however, only married straight couples can both adopt a child. We'll even license you as a foster parent. As long as you have no criminal record and no CPS record, under Michigan Law, you can adopt a child.

8. From what I've heard....
Apparently if two men or two women can get married then the next logical step is that a man can marry a goat or a woman can marry a plant. It's SOO logical isn't it? :eyes:

15. I think it is something along the lines of the view of marriage...
...being the union before God of a man and a woman and by suggesting you are pronouncing a same sex couple as married you are committing an offense before God, or something similar to this. This would apply to someone that holds a religious belief; others just use this excuse because they don't care much for homosexuals.

The funny thing is, I have met people that only object to the use of the word marriage. If you called it key lime pie or something, they could not care less.

I was watching the CSPAN coverage yesterday evening of the anti-gay marriage folks, and I was thoroughly disgusted. These totally out of touch politicians and church leaders where quoting studies saying how poorly children do in homes without fathers, how those families are generally living in poverty, etc. No argument there...but what does this have to do with gay and lesbian families??? I am actively involved in our local alternative family group (over 500 families), and the vast majority of them are educated, secure, and gave lots of thought to having children (out of necessity, much more than most straight people). The kids in these families were greatly wanted, and are some of the best kids you could meet. I’m guessing that in another10 years or so, when enough of these kids are old enough to study, that we will find out that the kids in such environments are actually better off than average. (Even the limited current studies show that these kids are emotionally equal to or better than their peers raised by straight parents.)

My partner and I have three kids, two of them school aged, and they are (forgive the maternal bragging!) great kids. The older ones are in the gifted programs at school, they excel in music, dance, and sports...they are being raised to be critical thinkers, and will certainly be assets to our society in the future. Yes, we are both doctors, so are able to give our kids lots of experiences that others may not be able to afford, but we also show them that those who are as fortunate are also obligated give back to the society in which they live.

Bottom line - if people don’t agree with gay marriage, I can accept that...but they should use appropriate facts to back up their case. (I can’t imagine what those would be, but I’d be happy to listen.) Since many of the speakers were religious clergy, it seems that the majority of the argument is that gay marriage is against some sort of perceived religious thought. This is fine since we are not asking for our marriage to be recognized by any conservative right wing church...we want it recognized by our supposedly secular government.

One last thing. Just take a minute to re-read a bit of the Declaration of Independence. It really does say it all, and it make clear why it is so important for our voices to be heard:
“We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.--That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, --That whenever any Form of Government becomes destructive of these ends, it is the Right of the People to alter or to abolish it, and to institute new Government, laying its foundation on such principles and organizing its powers in such form, as to them shall seem most likely to effect their Safety and Happiness.”

I know most of them oppose the FMA, but most of them say say they are against gay marriage as well. I think I heard that Nancy Pelosi support gay marriage, but I'm not sure...Curious.
