Fabulous Economic Insights From Don Evans, Secretary Of Commerce
I'm sorry I don't have a link to this story, but it came out in the Kansas City Star on 9 July, 2004, under the headline "Commerce Chief Touts Growth".

EDIT

"Instead, Evans descibed the American economy as the strongest he has seen, though he added there are areas that could improve.

More Americans work and own homes now than ever before, Evans said. He said household wealth is at its highest and stock ownership is more widespread than ever.

The nation's manufacturing remains powerful and continues to grow, Evans said. It would represent the world's fifth-largest economy on its own, he said. Manufacturing jobs, however, have been disappearing worldwide through increased technology.

'The myth out there is that those are the only good jobs out there,' Evans said. 'Eighty-nine percent of the jobs in America are service jobs, and they're good jobs.'"

EDIT

Spoken as someone who's never bused a table, emptied a bedpan or flipped a burger in his whole manicured life. Oh, and was he in a come during the 1990s boom? Fool.

1. Evans was in Little Rock yesterday, my office is across from
the newspaper and we're always inconvenienced by his trips. He seems to have a special relationship with the rightwing nutcases at the only statewide paper.

Anyway this story was buried deep in the B section.

The nut graf:

"So much of it is going to be centered around education as we continue to move this economy down the road of not only a manufacturing economy but an information, knowledgebased economy," Evans said.
