10. Love to support this! Got link?
I'll go looking if you don't have one handy. Thanks.

He's grating when I see him on tv (to me, personally), but his actions are so cool and his positions are almost always correct.

20. Secret Service?
So do they or don't they protect the embassies? In F-9/11 the officer who showed up to check out what Moore was doing said that they don't usually protect the embassies. But here Charlie Rangel is being arrested by the Secret Service. What's the story?

2. It is a shame one has to get arrested to get attention paid
to a situation where millions of people are in danger.

17. To be fair, there's bipartisan action on Sudan.
There are a lot of people in Congress, in both Houses and parties, who are not only talking about this but demanding action. Sen. Sam Brownback (R-KS), Rep. Elijah Cummings (D-MD), and others had a press conference about it today. It'll probably run again on C-SPAN (Check coverage tonight). The Congressional Black Caucus is on the forefront of this.

And I LOVE Charlie Rangel. He's marvelous. When the silly Senate people were getting all worked up about gay marriage, he was out calling attention to a life-and-death matter. Go get 'em, Charlie!

5. Can't wait to hear the callers
on the Bush line. Wonder what kind of racist tripe they are going to spew?

Civil disobedience at its finest. You go, Rep. Rangel! :bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce::bounce:

7. Hey proles. . .
. . .first of all how are you doing. I am not too familiar with the Sudan issue other than there is genocide. Is there a partisan angle. . .will the Bush callers be calling because there is a GOP position on this issue or will they be calling just because its Rangel?

14. Hey there!
I'm fine. Thanks for asking. We need to have a Chicago DU gathering soon. :hi:

I really wasn't thinking of a partisan angle, more of a racial angle, perhaps how they aren't ready for self rule or somehow it's not a U.S. concern, based on nothing more than the color of their skin.

You know, the usual racist tripe. :puke:

. . .as much as I love C-SPAN everything becomes partisan when you forced to choose into to call on a line that reflects your ideology.

21. Fundies have latched onto the Sudan issue
I'm a frequent viewer of the 700 Club (keep your enemies closer, and all), and the evangelical fundie community has latched onto the Sudan issue because Christians are being persecuted there. Of course their reports never talk about the animists and practicioners of native religion who are being killed in just as great numbers. 'Cause those pagans deserve it. :eyes:

Sort of how they go on about the Chinese government cracking down on Christians but are mindnumbingly silent on the Tibet issue.

Not to say it's not a legit issue, because it very much is, I was just pointing out the fundie GOP angle.

8. U.S. Secret Service Protective Mission:
http://www.ustreas.gov/usss/protection.shtml
There's nothing there about guarding embassies, unless it's covered by this phrase:
"visiting heads of foreign states or governments and their spouses traveling with them, other distinguished foreign visitors to the United States, and official representatives of the United States performing special missions abroad"

Isn't an embassy grounds considered territory of the country occupying it?

11. Secret Service
I wondered about that myself. In F911, they're the ones who warn Michael Moore outside the Saudi embassy.

12. The Secret Service protects Embassies
The Secret Service is made up of two primary divisions. 1) Uniformed Division and 2) Special Agent Division.
The role of the Uniformed Division is protection of the White House, the residence of the Vice President and the over 170 foreign embassies located in Washington, D.C.

The Secret Service Uniformed Division are often called the White House Police, probably because that is what they were named when they started out in the 1920s.

22. What are you talking about?
Are you implying that:
1) The First Amendment somehow applies to protect Americans in foreign lands. It does not. the Constitution only has juristdiction in the United States. Foreign Embassies are foreign lands and are on foreign soil. The US Constitution cannot protect a citizen's right to assemble on a foreign land. The laws of that nation apply.

2) That somehow the US Constitution allows illegal activity.
You quote that Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Lets take these one at a time. Can the government prevent people from the free exercise of religion if it involves human sacrifice, of course. Can the government prevent people from yelling fire in a crowded theatre, of course. Can the government prevent a newspaper from printing the secrets of teh atmoic bomb, or broadcasting the location of troop movement, of course. Can the government prevent people from peaceably assembling in a human chain to prevent a woman fro entering an abortion clinic, of course.

The fundimental rights provided in the US Constitution are determined under the legal standard of strict scrutiny. This means that the governmetn can take an action to violate these rights if there is a compelling interest involved and the government action is narrowly tailored to further the sompelling interest. Here the complelling interest is preventing criminal trespass. Arresting someone for violating a duly enacted criminal law is narrowly tailored to accomplish that interest. If Rangle was standing outside on the street with the rest of the protesters, he would not have been arrested. He violated a federal and D.C. criminal statute and was arrested accordingly.

FYU, he wanted to get arrested. If he didn't, he would have stayed in the legal protest area. He isn't upset he was arrested, nor does he blame the SS police for arresting him.

The US constitution provided him no protection from protesting on a foreign soil. Plus the D.C. criminal statutes against tesspass and the federal statutes protecting embassies were violated. The Constitution does not give you the right to violate any duly enacted laws.
