democracy: WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT
Edited on Tue Jul-13-04 11:45 PM by funkybutt
I attended a democratic party meetup tonight. It was fun. About 20 showed up and we had some very spirited and passionate discussions about the state of the US AND Louisiana. We shared information about websites and other resources for talking points, ect. Out of the 20 people, only one was a previous attendee of this meetup. This surprised me but it makes me think that the group is growning. The lady who had attended before works for a local kerry supporting organization called kerryroots. I brought handouts from democrats.org.

The meetup was hosted at a beer bar/sports bar that serves food. There were a couple of guys playing on a pool table adjacent to our table. There are many televisions on the walls in this establishment. At one point one of the pool players interrupted our meeting to point out that one of the baseball games was singing the national anthem. He took off his raggedy baseball cap and held it to his chest. We were appauled that he would interrupt our meeting to point out that a baseball stadium on one of the 10 or so TVs was singing the national anthem. He was obviously calling us out as being unpatriotic by not stopping our meeting to observe the anthem (although i suspect he doesn't always assume this position when at home watching baseball.) Then he said something about democracy and how "THIS IS WHAT IT'S ALL ABOUT!' (referring to the singing of the anthem). At this point several people in attendence pointed out to him, almost in unison, "no, THIS, is what it's all about!" (referring to our meeting). He wanderred back to his pool table as he and his partner continued to give us looks. But they were SO OUTNUMBERED!

3. Fast Food Culture and Good Consumers
That's how the Good Consumer operates. Good Consumers want fast food democracy, fast food news, fast food entertainment, fast food religion, fast food law, and fast food food. Anything more is a waste of valuable time and effort better spent consuming more fast food products, and is probably against our troops as well. Good Consumers trust that four out of five doctors know better than some uppity intellectual blowhard socialist what shoes to buy this week, and that world events can be summed up in ten minutes between commercials. Good Consumers know there's a God who can heal them through people on television who wear suits more expensive than any they've ever worn themselves if they pray long and hard enough after sending in a donation, and anyone who dares say otherwise is going to hell with the homosexuals. Good Consumers know who to listen to when deciding what it is that they themselves think about things like politics and who will win the next Survivor show. Give me the number five combo with the Republican agenda and a Coke, fatty-sized, please.
