They are to the far right of what the GOP APPEARS to be. Remember that the most influential people in washington are Dick Cheney, Tom DeLay, Don Rumsfeld, Karl Rove, etc. and they are all quite on the far right. However, they are clever to mask it with people like Shrub (the compassionate conservative), Powell (oh he's black, he's a good guy), and Hastert (the big fat loveable oaf).

An ultraconservative, fundamentalist, homophobic version of the Republican Party? If it split off about 10-15% of hardcore Republican voters, then it would nicely gut the Right Wing overall into two separate entities. Let them, I say. They run their fringe nutcase candidate, the Old GOP runs theirs and gets maybe 35% of the popular vote, while we continue to grab around 50-55%. It would be a dream come true.
