Someone explain red and blue to me
Sorry to be dumb, but I've never gotten this. In 2000, blue was Repug and red was Democratic, right? But it seems that I read that it flips this time? Is that right?

1. Red, I believe, represents the Party in
power at the time of the election. Blue is the challenger. It does make it confusing because I associated Red with Dem from last time. Now we are blue!

7. Got it backwards
Red is the challenger, which is why in 2000 Bush states were red

9. Then why are the Democratic States called
blue states? All the maps I see the Kerry leaning states are blue, the Bush ones Red. Oh, now I am even more confused!

10. Because people are thinking in terms of the 2000 election
after which the meme of "blue state" vs. "red state" took hold. Maybe Tom is right and the colors will become permanent because of the way the terms have been used for the last 4 years. I don't know if every network adopted the convention in 2000 for that matter.

8. Actually, exact opposite
Red has always represented the challenging party, blue represents the incumbent party. That's how the journalists have always done it in the past.

This year I bet Red = Republicans and Blue = Democrats because the colors became associated with the parties in the 2000 election debacle.

2. ISTR it has something to do with who won the last election
One color is for the incumbent's party, and the other for the challenger.

4. That was in the Old Republic of Amerika
In Bushevik occupied Imperial Amerika, the colors will NOT change anymore, because Busheviks making "Red State" into a permanent term (with no small help from everyone else, as usual).

It this case Blue stand for Yankee Sonovabitch and Red stand for Robert E. Lee's Boys (and Girls).

This is a connotation that is very beneficial to the Busheviks, as they are refighting the Civil War in many respects, and WWII really, by the people who in their hearts admired Hitler's handling of "Liberals".

It WILL NOT CHANGE.

Watch. All the Imperial Family has to do is ask their Pravd aWhores and it will be done.

watch. This one is 100% certain.

5. someone made up a map
where repug was Red and dem was blue. they did it by voting precenct, and it looks like Voldemort had about 80%.

I think from there, it just ended up red means Voldmort, Blue means President Gore

12. Thanks, everyone
It's still sort of confusing, but I think I get it now. Dems blue, Repugs red for 2004, unless the press changes it.

I just had to ask because I often use Dave Leip's Atlas (a fabulous site) http://www.uselectionatlas.org/USPRESIDENT/frametextj.html
and Democratic areas are always red there. Then, today I saw another map of the whole US by precinct from the 2000 election, and it showed the Democratic areas in blue.
