What to do with mean, neocon, borderline racist brother?

Fortunately he lives several hundred miles away from me and rarely calls, so I don't have to deal with him that much.

Unfortunately he's started emailing out his neopolitical, hate-filled, racist, skinhead-like spew. It started out with a simple F/9-11 bashing of Michael Moore. Now it's moved onto other stuff. I wonder if he is truly so socially defective that he doesn't realize how alienating his vitriol is, even to his own sister.

I've put him on my spam list so everything gets filtered out. I try to speak to him but everytime I do it blows up and he starts frothing and yelling and hangs up. It's not worth getting my blood pressure up for.

I was thinking about anonymously sending him F/9-11 or something similar by postal mail (when the movie comes to DVD of course).

All of you talk about how you're converting your neocon friends/family members by showing * for the criminal that he is. I wish I could get through my neanderthalic brother's thick skull long enough to do that...

everything else about him is broke as well. He cheated on his wife, a great woman who has supported him ever since he dropped out of college ten years ago... He did it openly and won't stop. He's just mean and borderline psychotic. I even found a petition against him at petitiononline.com to get him off ebay because he was harassing people...

Can't believe we came from the same parents...

Guess I should just ignore him completely, the blacklist is probably the best option. :) If I were to send him progressive style emails he'd flood me with more hate mail or call me up and yell at me...

He does need psychiatric/psychological help bad. I often say he's so right wing that he makes Pat Robertson look like a tree hugging hippie freak.

We both had a tough childhood... I think his anger stems from that. I was rebellious and angry as a teen while he was perfect and angelic. Look how we turned out!

BTW his wife (recently just turned ex-wife) is trying to convince him to see someone professionally about his problems. they run a business together so she has a hard time walking away from him. (she still says she loves him which I just don't get personally, but I know he was very lovable and nice when they first met back when he was 17.)

And as for everyone else on here "converting" their republican family, I would guess that at least 50% of the stories we read on here about how "I converted my repub brother!!!" are a load of BS. And I'd say another 10-20% are actually the relative just saying something to shut the people up and stop them from bothering them about politics. So I wouldn't let all those stories get you down.

You might want to send him a kind email saying that you unfortunately can't take his propaganda emailings seriously and won't be persuaded by any of it. Tell him the facts and trends are not in favor of any of it, that the reality is that in ~2050 admixed and non-white people will be the majority and much of the elite of America- and there is realistically nothing that he can do to stop or change this. Women and gays will achieve equality, confidence, and high offices. He will have to adapt or find a different society more suited to his tastes.

Your real problem is his immaturity, of course, and insistence on (white) male privilege. The latter usually has to do with some fact or sense of inferiority, e.g. mental problems and/or failure in school/work/wealth accumulation or social life. I say this as a white male who has seen plenty of the phenomenon.

...and many refuse to even consider, is that family is optional.

If the guy is lost, so be it. Better to speak to him and tell him that he can live his life as he sees fit but do not bring it around you, than to have to face hate in your email. If he will not respect your feelings, then he does not respect you, and he has turned his back on his family, so cut him loose. You can block his emails and be free of it. If he wants contact, he will have to write or call, but clicking a piece of evil at you just for the hell of it will no longer be an option open to him.

People don't decend into hateful behaviour with their family unless they really don't care about their family. Defend yourself if you can't trust your family to look out for you.

25. You're right. There's a limit to how much abuse

anyone should take from a family member just because they're family. No doubt the limit is different for everyone.

Confronting him might work, especially if you just say you disagree with him politically and therefore neither of you should send political e-mails to the other "but I hope you'll keep in touch."

If it's any consolation, everybody has a brother sort of like yours. Or a father, mother, sister, uncle, aunt. If they don't, they're overdue for one.

I apologize if that sounds harsh. I don't intend to hart your feelings, but if your brother is such a problem to so many people (you mentioned a bulletin board getting complaints about his harrassing others) are complaining about him and he is oblivious to it, then he sounds like he has a serious problem. He needs professional help and you cant provide that and you cant force him to seek it out.

Don't hate him; he's ill. He needs help. You can try to help him, but you can't do anything unless he wants to be helped.
