Anyone else out there find Edward's life story moving? |
|
The whole thing - I know a certain amount of it is part of the mythos that every politician has to create (which isn't a bad thing.)
But the whole story - rags to riches, the coutship of Elizabeth, the death of their son...
Tell me that his story doesn't pull on your heartstrings!

With equally moving lifestories. Gephardt had a particularly rags to riches (I dont beleive as much riches as Edwards though I am not sure) kind of life, coming from a family with a rather blue collar background and a mother with an eighth grade education, going to school through loans and grants from his church. And a son diagnosed with terminal cancer as an infant. And what about Dennis Kucinich. moving 17 times in a few years and his family having to live in a car at one point. That is a particularly moving story as well. His story is moving, but certainly not a great deal more than the life stories of a good number of people in public offices, not limited to Democrats alone. Gary Bauer, though I dont like him much and find a good deal of hypocrisy in his moralizing was the son of a janitor coming from one of the most humble backgrounds of any recent member of congress. Having had an affair with a 26 year old secretary while being on a morality crusade against vice doesnt make him much of a consistant figure, but rags to richs story is just as compelling as Edwards is.
Edwards story is compelling, but not so much as many average citizens who go through the same every day, and continue to go through it. And though Edwards has said some remarkable things as candidate for the President and while stumping for the Vice Presidency, he did not show the same energy and enthusiasm for fighting for those members of the less fortunate of the Two Americans that became the centerpiece of his presidential campaign while he was senator. I mean he probably did care about it, but was not as vocal and active about it while he was senator. But still, I am sure he means well, and as a first term senator, theres not as much one can do as if one has been around the senate for a while.
