Chicago '68: A Chronology , (fascinating reading, gave me a chill)
http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Delphi/1553/c68chron.html

-this actually covers events from '67 to '75. I found it incredibly interesting and worthwhile given some of the similarities to the present.
----
From the introduction:

They called it "Czechago." Nowhere else during that decade was dissension so dramatically opposed as on the streets of Chicago during the turbulent Democratic National Convention in August 1968. The barbed wire-laced jeeps in Grant Park evoked images of Russian tanks in the streets of Prague.

For many it was a watershed event. After the Tet offensive that January many Americans began to shift their opinions of the war in Vietnam; after Chicago '68 they began to doubt the ability of American institutions to tolerate active dissension.

Chicago '68 was more than just another in a series of antiwar protests, and it was more than just a riot—no matter, whose riot. Chicago '68 was a focal point of the decade. On the streets and in the parks of Chicago the social conflicts of the Sixties were on display.

Heads were cracked, tear gas billowed, police lines advanced through demonstrators—and television cameras captured some of the graphic scenes. The eyes of the nation focused on Chicago and we decided who we were, what side we were on, and what we would fight for. Chicago changed minds, Chicago changed politics, Chicago changed the Left, Chicago changed the media, Chicago changed those who were here and those who watched from far away, and Chicago changed Chicago.

1. And the Chicago eight trial in the aftermath
It was truly a trial to shock America. A black man was tied and gagged in the courtroom and respect for authority was made non-existant. It shocked America and the repercusions are still being felt today.

5. Best.Sentence.Ever.
Seven Yippies and the pig are arrested.

Goddamn, it's hard not to have some bizarre admiriation for the totality of Daley's totalitarian state in Chicago.

8. Daley's '68 malapropism
Edited on Sat Jul-17-04 03:42 AM by secondtermdenier
"Gentlemen, get the thing straight, once and for all: the policeman isn't there to create disorder, the policeman is there to preserve disorder."

makes me think of today's "War On Drugs".

People forget Daley was a Democrat! What a messy convention!

10. Oh, I remember that spring and summer in Chicago well.
I was almost 15 and believe me, from a 15-year old's perspective, it was mighty bizarre.

I remember the 7:00 pm curfew after Dr. King was killed. Anyone under the age of 18 was subject to arrest from 7:00 pm until 7:00 am the next morning. I think this went on for about five days or so.

I remember watching the funeral train of Bobby Kennedy travelling to Arlington and my Grandma, God love her, saying the rosary and praying not only for the Kennedys but for our country as well.

I remember my brother Tom and all his friends had city jobs that summer. They all had just graduated from high school and worked for Streets and Sanitation, sprucing up Chicago for the convention.

I vividly remember watching TV with my mother and grandmother when Abraham Ribicoff made his speech and when the networks cut away and showed America what was going on downtown. It was the second time I ever saw my Mom cry. My eldest brother was in Vietnam at that moment and she was absolutely sickened by what she saw. I don't think she ever voted for Daley again after that night.

Yes, boys and girls, 1968 was quite a year.

16. Wow!
thanks for the recollections. It is truly amazing how much happened during that short period of time.
I had a good friend who went to Chicago with his father who was a Democratic delegate. My friend decided to join the protests and among other things, I vividly remember his account of watching the police throw someone through a plate glass window and toss a bike rider over the edge of a cement underpass.

11. I can see a repetition of this in 2008 if Kerry isn't careful
He's now trying to "out-hawk" the neo-cons on Iraq.....hopefully only to appeal to the middle and get elected.

12. I'm starting to wonder
protesting at the DNC may be as relevant as protesting the RNC.

would be, judging from some opinions here, that it would create further division between people who need to work together.
Some people just don't understand how the issue of peace is right at the core of many people's values.
