Another crappy email...
Edited on Fri Jul-16-04 04:56 PM by frogbison
Anybody have time to help me refute it? Especially the part about Clinton offered bin Laden's head 3 times. A lot of the rest is just silly.

See below:

Something to think about..........

There were 39 combat related killings in Iraq during the month of January.....

In the fair city of Detroit there were 35 murders in the month of January.

That's just one American city, about as deadly as the entire war torn country of Iraq.

When some claim President Bush shouldn't have started this war, state the following ..

FDR...led us into World War II. Germany never attacked us: Japan did.

From 1941-1945, 450,000 lives were lost, an average of 112,500 per year.

Truman...finished that war and started one in Korea, North Korea never attacked us.

From 1950-1953, 55,000 lives were lost, an average of 18,334 per year.

John F. Kennedy...started the Vietnam conflict in 1962. Vietnam never attacked us.

Johnson...turned Vietnam into a quagmire.

From 1965-1975, 58,000 lives were lost, an average of 5,800 per year.

Clinton...went to war in Bosnia without UN or French consent, Bosnia never attacked us.

He was offered Osama bin Laden's head on a platter three times by Sudan and did nothing.

Osama has attacked us on multiple occasions.

In the two years since terrorists attacked us President Bush
has ...

liberated two countries, crushed the Taliban, crippled al-Qaida,
put nuclear inspectors in Libya, Iran and North Korea
without firing a shot, and captured a terrorist who slaughtered 300,000 of his own people.

The Democrats are complaining about how long the war is taking, but... It took less time to take Iraq than it took Janet Reno to take the Branch Davidian compound. That was a 51 day operation.

We've been looking for evidence of chemical weapons in Iraq for less time than it took Hillary Clinton to find the Rose Law Firm billing records.

It took less time for the 3rd Infantry Division and the Marines to destroy the Medina Republican Guard than it took Ted Kennedy to call the police after his Oldsmobile sank at Chappaquiddick.

It took less time to take Iraq than it took to count the votes in Florida!!!!

Our Commander-In-Chief is doing a GREAT JOB! The Military moral is high! The biased media hopes we are too ignorant to realize the facts.

PASS IT ON.

Edited to make the sentences break less = shorter.

2. Germany never attacked us: Japan did. .. This is another LIE
Germany attacked and sank many of our Merchant Marine Ships which sailed under the US Flag. That is considered the same as American soil. This is the same e-mail that has been spamming our boards all morning.

9. Not to mention the fact that Germany declared war
on us after Pearl Harbor. Was FDR supposed to ignore THAT?

What a dipshit.

4. My suggestion:
Don't waste your valuable time trying to respond to all this idiocy with the truth. It wouldn't work, anyhow. As the saying goes, none so blind as those who will not see. Regarding the previous conflicts and the CICs who "started them"--don't they teach history in our public schools anymore? Or maybe it's all that homeschooling that's going on. Or the religious private schools. I recall one of the worst years of my parenthood was the one I sent my daughter to a "Christian" school. Not only were the students, teachers and staff decidedly "unChristian", the level of education was absolutely awful. Did a lot of "home" schooling myself (and my husband) that year, so my daughter could at least have a shot at some adequate learning skills. My bad for leaving her there all year!

Anyway, if you do want to respond to this e-mail, maybe tell the sender you always document any information you disseminate and look forward to them documenting theirs!

And good luck!

8. Actually I saw it several weeks past. Unless you hang out in
GD 24/7 though, you wouldn't know it. Why do you have to be so rude. This is Democratic Underground, there are hundreds of other threads. And who is "we", you got a friggen mouse in your pocket or something? You remind me of the pundits on CNN NBC CBS and FOX "the American people feel....." bla bla bla.

10. Ever heard of the search function we have here?
Edited on Fri Jul-16-04 05:45 PM by QC
You should try it sometime. It's a handy little resource in cases like this. Answers all kinds of questions and prevents the endless duplication of threads that makes it almost impossible to follow this board unless you quit your job and live here.

As to why I'm bothered by these endless reposts of every comment some knuckledragging, extra-chromosome brownshirt somewhere lets drop from his reptilian lips, here it is: the country is going to hell in a bucket, and we spend most of our time here sitting around repeating freeper talking points, marveling again and again at how stupid and cruel they are (as though everyone hadn't figured that out years ago), and the like. Do they obsess over us the way we do over them? I doubt it, considering how effective they are in doing things like getting Bush's critics fired from their jobs.

12. Yes I HAVE heard of the search function.
General Discussion is just that general discussion.

Here are some rules respecting civility:

PERSONAL ATTACKS, CIVILITY, AND RESPECT

The administrators of Democratic Underground are working to provide a place where progressives can share ideas and debate in an atmosphere of mutual respect. Despite our best efforts, many of our members often stray from this ideal and cheapen the quality of discourse for everyone else. Unfortunately, it is simply impossible to write a comprehensive set of rules forbidding every type of antisocial behavior. The fact that the rules don't forbid a certain type of post does not automatically make an uncivil post appropriate, nor does it imply that the administrators approve of disrespectful behavior. Every member of this community has a responsibility to participate in a respectful manner, and to help foster an atmosphere of thoughtful discussion. In this regard, we strongly advise that our members exercise a little common decency, rather than trying to parse the message board rules to figure out what type of antisocial behavior is not forbidden.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/forums/rules.html#civility

Here are the message board rules short version: (from the same link)

MESSAGE BOARD RULES (SHORT VERSION)

1. This is a message board for Democrats and other progressives.
2. Treat people with respect. Don't be rude or bigoted. Discuss the message, not the messenger.
3. Don't post entire articles. Instead, post short excerpts (not exceeding 4 paragraphs) with links.
4. Respect the wishes of the moderators and administrators.

It is not this poster's fault that this country is going to hell in a handbucket. I know it is very frustrating the situation we all find ourselves in, but, that doesn't mean it is right to take it out on someone who is new here.

14. You're right. I should not take it out on the original poster.
And I apologize for that.

But the fact remains that an awful lot of what gets posted here is the same GOP talking points, over and over, day after day. Sometimes a quarter of the threads on the first page are regurgitated freeperisms. In fact, a couple of people here (who will remain nameless) seem to make it a practice to haunt the FR board day and night and then rush breathlessly to DU to repost every stupid, vile thing that gets said there. (OMG!!! A Freeper Just Said John Kerry Is A Homo!!!) As though we're supposed to be perpetually surprised that there are some real stupid assholes on the right wing who have way too much time on their hands.

The problem with spending so much time on that stuff, of course, is that it tends to make us reactive--we fret over how to respond to what some irrelevant jerkoff on another board said, rather than coming up with our own attacks, educating ourselves about what really matters, etc. If we obsess over the freepers, then we are putting them in control, and frankly I think the Left in this country, and not just DU, has spent way too much time back on its heels playing defense these past few years.

First I've heard of that.

Unfortunately, as with other e-mails of this ilk, it's too long and rambling to address it all.

13. Gee
I don't want us to be at each others' throats! And maybe I shouldn't respond to the email, (but I probably will.) It is good advice to remind the sender to document the stuff they send purporting to be fact. Thanks to you all!

I think we're going to win in November. :0)

15. Sorry about that. As I said above, I flew off the handle because
this one has already made the rounds quite a few times. But I should not have been rude to you, and I do apologize.

It's up to you whether to respond to these things. In my experience, the brainwashed cultists who send this kind of stuff around are not open to reason. You can reach some people, but not the true believers.

As for the Detroit business, you might point out that there are about 1,000,000 million Americans in Detroit and only about 140,000 in Iraq, so even if the same number of Americans is killed in both places, that still gives Iraq a fatality rate about 8 times that of Detroit. This is a really dumb argument, but it has a lot of currency with some--Brit Hume even repeated in on FauxNews.

Also, Japan made an unprovoked attack on the U.S., which then declared war on Japan. Since Germany was an ally of Japan, they responded by declaring war on us. It's amazing how the very same conservatives who are always griping about how ignorant the "sheeple" are don't know the first thing about history--or anything else.

The other stuff? Well, I suppose you could point out that we had real allies supporting us in Kosovo and Bosnia, as opposed to having only the likes of Mongolia and Slovenia supporting us, as is now the case.

18. I Received This Email Earlier Today
And I posted my response to it in this thread:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_mesg&forum=104&topic_id=2006569&mesg_id=2006569

It doesn't go point-by-point -- who has time for that? -- but I offered to answer any specific points that my friend wanted me to address. He's kind of right-wing, but he actually responded back and told me he didn't know a lot of what I had written, and would like to discuss it more next week. He says he doesn't keep up on the news so he just believed what this email said.

It turned out to be quite a nice little opportunity to educate someone.
