In an embarrassing governmental gaffe, an official tribute sign erected on the fence surrounding Ground Zero actually misstated the date of the terror attacks, a glaring mistake addressed only after a visitor recently complained about the error.

Was there not some sort of markup, a guideline, if you will, for the engraver to follow? Was there no text that he had to copy? I seriously doubt he did it from memory, or off the top of his head.

Who, exactly, approved that text? Ya know...?

Amazingly, and sadly, stupid. On every possible level.

7. The "engraver" probably misstyped...

...I would assume that the designer put the layout together on a computer which was then sent to the machine that did the engraving.

The fact that the mistake was not caught is, as you say, amazingly stupid and sad on every possible level.
