McCain Praises Cheney As Rumors Swirl

LANSING, Mich. (AP) - If Vice President Dick Cheney needed a testimonial to quiet the talk about his future on the Republican ticket, GOP Sen. John McCain provided it Friday, introducing him to Michigan voters as "indispensable, very debonair" and "not just another pretty face."

McCain, the maverick Republican who often has been at odds with his GOP brethren - starting with President Bush - joined Cheney to stump for the presidential ticket in the swing state that narrowly went for Democrat Al Gore in 2000.

As the buzz in Washington continued about whether Cheney would be off the ticket, the Arizona lawmaker effusively described Bush's No. 2, tracing his career in public service from previous Republican administrations to the U.S. House to defense secretary during the 1991 Persian Gulf War to the post-9/11 era.

"He is in effect deputy commander in chief," McCain said of Cheney, whom some Democratic critics contend is really calling the shots in the White House. "We are very fortunate the president relies on the counsel of this man," McCain added, praising Cheney's "resolve, experience, patriotism," and calling him "indispensable and very debonair."

1. Bush was right
in South carolina in 2000. McCain has lost his mental facilities. Too long in the HAnoi Hilton.

3. What's with these military types like Colin Powell
and John McCain. Oh, I forgot. They're "trained" to think for others.

4. No, He's been promised Vice President -
Nothing short of that makes any sense. Even if (and that's still a big if) old foul-mouth is not dumped from the ticket, McCain has been promised the next VP opening, should "health problems" or legal action force his resignation.

5. So was McCain taken down to the WH dungeon and fucked by...
Bush, Cheney, the neo-cons and Ann Coulter w/strap-on and now he's just another pod-con?

What is his strategy? The only thing I could think is play-nice to keep the party-sheep calm, watch the new-cons implode and then try to take the party back to his inadequate vision.

Otherwise, he is a "Manchurian Candidate".

6. Was McCain doing sarcasm? Debonair??
Probably not, but maybe he was trying to get some sarcasm thru, under the radar by packaging it as compliments. Or maybe not. This also sounds like something from the Onion, but it's not.

9. "not just another pretty face..."
Edited on Sat Jul-17-04 12:24 PM by Paranoid_Portlander
was certainly sarcasm on a "just kidding" level with no offense intended. But what are we to make of "debonair"? Just kidding on that one? Then we move on to "indispensable" and other "compliments". Just kidding? Not certain here. IF McCain was doing sarcasm (and that's a big IF), it's quite subtle.

8. Watching McCain's self-respect disintegrate before our very eyes
When someone writes a biography about him, the proper title would be, "The Rise and Fall of a Political Whore."

for shrub and F'U Cheney. it will ruin his reputation, integrity, and credibility--which is what the bush cabel wants. he was getting under their skin and a big liability for them.
