Extreme Right Religious Right Extremers on the Extreme Right |
|
After watching Jon Stewart, and an interview on Hardball, when the governor said "liberal" three times in an interview and "folks of the Heartland" about five times, and reading a dozen or so articles where a con referred to someone as a "liberal democrat," I decided that we need to start busting out "Religious Right" and "Far Right" a lot more.
It has long said that the "Religious Right" GOP convention of 1992 helped out Clinton, a lot (and if there's any doubt, the keynotes for this convention are all popular moderates -- and many of them are pro-choice).
I think talking points kind of suck, because they make everyone into idiots -- but we have to jam the receptors of the people who will be hearing "heartland values," and "liberal democrats" over and over.
And I don't even think it's dishonest to say this -- it is apparent, that since 1994, these maverick, younger GOP religious corporate zealot idealists (those responsible for boycotting France/Rich Santorum types), who can certainly not be called moderate. The entire GOP is letting their extreme memes dictate the party talking points, in hopes to draw their base -- and it should be obvious to almost anyone that it seems desperate and pandering -- I mean, Bush is saying that God speaks through him, now.
Just a little "religious right" here and an "extreme right-wing" there, might help jam the receptors a little... but nothing to the extent of the pathetic GOP pandering.

1. We used Radical Right in the early 90's. |
|
Some people have no problem with others being "religious" and it also sounds as though only those on the religious right are religious.
Far right doesn't really say anything about the fact that they can be militant, which scares folks, or radical, which also scares folks.
Somestimes though, militant polls positive especially with, er, yep, the military and during a war.

I remember "Radical Right" -- and I think we need to bring it back.

2. Well, I've been trotting out an old favorite |
|
Fascist--it's been overused in the past, but is pretty apropos here.
Extremists is a good term as well.
I do love the one I saw here somewhere, though-- the Talibornagain

because I would say that some of what's happening is pre-pre fascist, but since no one knows what it really means, it's kind of ineffective. People automatically think Hitler, which of course they have no understanding of.
Unfortunately, the right, however, has managed to link "liberal" and "commie" very effectively, even though it's really Rousseau they have to "blame," not Marx.
Shame.

6. I agree that "Fascist" is pretty ineffective |
|
When someone hears one of us referring to Bush and/or the GOP as "fascists," they think we're giving in to hyperbole: after all, they say, Bush hasn't killed six million Arabs (Bush's Jews, as it were), those lefties are really off their kilter likening him to Hitler.
Of course, they don't get that Hitler had been in power for 10 years before he invaded Poland; in 1938 he hadn't yet killed those millions of Jews (though, he had already started moving them to prison camps like Guant.. I mean, Dachau...).
I wonder how many people who are shocked at our referring to Bush as a fascist would deny that Bush would be willing to kill as many Muslims (and any others, for that matter) as he would feel neccessary to "protect" America.

How about "marginal right"? |
|
I like "extreme right-wing" because it implies scary distance from the mainstream. How about also using "marginal right" to imply their small numbers as well?

5. The best example I can think of is Lt. |
|
General Boykin, who shows up in Sunday services at church, in uniform, to spout off about God and "satan" and evil ad nauseum.
The dude had the unmitigated gall to stand there are represent the US military, as he blabbed on and on about hellfire and brimstone. Clearly a very disturbed man.
I've seen close-up photos of him. His eyes are on fire with fanaticism. They're burning like charcoals, ready to bomb, kill, convert - all in the name of his religion.
The more you look at him, the more you see 'Taliban' reflected in his eyes.
