Help turn KY to a blue state
Dr. Daniel Mongiardo needs support. I read in the state forum that he just had to loan his campaign 500K. But he has closed the gap in Bunning's lead to 48%-39%. Please I beg you help KY have at least one Democrat in the Senate. Next step, get rid of McConnell.

Here Dan's website -

1. As a former Kentuckian
I was raised in Northern Kentucky, and for the life of me, I don't know why anyone in that area would vote re:puke:.

A good number of people in Newport, Bellevue, and Dayton depend on AFDC to survive. What are they going to do when the re:puke:'s destroy all of the social programs that they depend on?

How do they expect their new babies to survive when W.I.C. is removed?

It is an economically depressed area.

I was always amazed when election time came around and the polls were dead.

The only way to turn Kentucky into a blue state is to get out the vote. Educate some of the poor people that don't have a clue. Give them voter registration forms and then help them fill them out.
Offer rides to the polls in you area.

Tack signs up in the local watering holes(with permission of course)

You have an uphill battle. I don't envy you.

2. Dr. Dan has an excellent rural plan
His website contains a lot of proposals. I think the worm is turning here in KY. If Chandler wins again, and Clooney gets in as well as Dr Dan, KY might go Kerry. Edwards on the ticket helped, I think. KY went for Clinton - I think for both terms.

5. A 15 point turnaround from 2000
is not expected, and KY is not in play in the Pres election.
IMO the Doc is our best and only hope for 04, and this is going to be extremely tough. No Clooney. Regrettably, KY must be regained incrementally.

9. Hey Big "O"!
You really think the Doc has a chance at beating Bunning??

10. Pragmatically, NO!
But, I would consider a Bunning defeat sweet justice. Bunning is a do-nothing official. Doc may not win, but it will be much closer than the projections. I think our hopes rest on THIS one race for an upset in 04.

7. It also helps that some Kentuckians appear to be
experiencing "buyers' remorse" over Fletcher.

3. Health Care Will Be A Big Issue
As far as getting McConnell out, I think Jerry Abramson has the best chance. A Dem mayor of Louisville, Jerry is now serving his fourth term because he has the proven ability to work with people to get the job done.

4. 548,000 Kentuckians living without health insurance
according to his web site - he has a plan for small businesses to cover some folks and he os also is for a Patients Bill Of Rights.

8. Think About The Demographics
Most of the rural people in the state are retired and need Medicare/Medicaid. ShrubCo is trying to kill the benefits in that area to support the Iraq mistake (see Mississippi).

The Doc needs to get that word out and develop a plan outside of Fletcher's control.

14. No way. Abramson should run for Congress.
There is alot of anitpathy (or there used to be) between the folks "out in the state" and Louisville, so some Louisvillian running for Senate might be tough, tho, Mitch McConnell did it (and Marlowe Cook, before him).

I think Abramsons best bet would be to run for Congress, to unseat Anne Northrup. Abramson was pretty popular as mayor, so I think he could be a sucessfull candidate against Northrup.

16. Was????
He served his 3-term limit as Mayor of Louisville.

When the Louisville and Jefferson County governments merged, that eliminated the term limits and so he got re-elected again for a fourth term.

11. KY-healthcare & roads
When I lived in Lexington (13 yrs ago)
-my father was visiting & I had to take him to the VA Hospital.
There was a guy in the waiting room who had a stroke 5 days before!
He couldn't get to the hospital for 5 whole days!
How horrible!

The fundy churches ran politics & bussed their members to the polls.

12. It's Not Roads
So much as a lack of public transportation in the rural areas of the state. A lot of seniors don't have the resources to get anywhere much and have to depend on others to help out.

13. I Live in Western KY
and I support any efforts to get Bunning OR McConnell out of office. I voted for the good doctor in the primary and support him at every opportunity. I wish we could make some political hay by finding videotape of a rally Bunning attended; Dr. Mongiardo's image on a poster was ridiculed because he 'resembled a terrorist.' Racist bastards!

In my 2nd congressional district, Adam Smith is running against Ron Lewis, a fundie ex-preacher. Smith is 26, a farmer from near my home town, with a master's in political science. I believe the Kentucky Democratic Party has written off his run for office as a lost cause, however. He doesn't even have a website! If the party were serious about trying to win this election, you'd think they could spring for funding a website at the very least!

I'd like nothing better than ejecting Ron Lewis from office. He won election in '94 after the death of Bill Natcher (remember Natcher as the congressman with the longest unbroken record of votes in the House - over 40 years without a missed vote. He had himself wheeled onto the House floor on a hospital gurney so he wouldn't miss what turned out to be his last vote).

Lewis has aligned himself with the worst of the fundies by introducing a bill that would allow congressional override of Supreme Court decisions. His environmental record is abysmal as well.

15. As a former Kentuckian, its pretty amazing...
...how far the Democrats have deteriorated from what I remember in the 1970s.

The GOP was always somewhat competitive, but its really suprising as to how strong they've become statewide.

18. Please keep this kicked
I think once a week, we DUers should post about a candidate running against an incumbent - Like Morrison vs DeLay in TX, etc. We need to send these folks all our spare change or work for them in some way.
