Each morning I read 5 new sites. Take a look; is the worm turning?
Despite all of the sangria that Mrs. Cat and I drank last night at Moody's Pub in Uptown, I still managed to get up this morning to read the news. By the way, if DU ever does another meetup there, we will happily do a repeat performance of last night's shameful display, including moments when we argue loudly about who could humiliate themselves the most in a run against Barak Obama; the ingredients of maraschino cherries; and what we'd really like to say to people during job interviews.

I digress. The point of this post is that now, the morning after, I would expect to feel like crap. I fed the cats, put on some coffee, and sat down to read the news, and what do I see as the following headlines?

L.A. Times front page:
http://www.latimes.com/
(snip)
Kerry's Crime-Fighting Early Days
By James Rainey
His postwar years in a D.A.'s office honed his skills as a tough-minded leader, supporters say.
(snip)
---I must note here, that there are also three disturbing headlines, which you should read for yourself. I refuse to gloat over death and human suffering.

Chicago Trib:
http://www.chicagotribune.com
A lot of bad news from Iraq and Israel/Palestinian Territories. Again, I take no satisfaction in these horrors.
I do, however, feel that as long as these things are being reported, there is hope that those people responsible will be held to account.

Chicago Sun Times: Total fluff. Ignore.

N.Y. Times:
http://www.nytimes.com
(snip)
Editorial: Ehrenreich: It's Over, Ralph
(snip)
Also, tons of bad news on the economy and Iraq. Sheesh.

And, today's personal favorite:
Washington Post:
http://www.washingtonpost.com
(snip)
Bush Mum on Second Term
President offers no specifics about what he would do if he wins again.
(snip)

So, I wonder, is the tide turning? Is the press waking up? Are we starting to see some of this stuff starting to stick?

Right now, I, unlike Chimpy, am going to read each of these articles. I'll be back. Comment if you like.

1. Get ready
For the Democratic pre-convention media blitz.

And get ready for the Repukes to do (stage) something to get Kerry-Edwards off of the front pages.

By the way, the worm HAS turned IMHO.

2. Okay, does this sound scary or desperate?

I'm not sure what this means:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/ac2/wp-dyn/A58274-2004Jul17?language=printer

President Is Still Mum on Agenda For Second Term

(snip)
"After their convention is over and we're into the August phase and into our convention, we will begin aggressively talking about the president's vision for the next four years," White House communications director Dan Bartlett said.

Said another adviser: "We are going to have a window after the Democratic convention and at our convention where people are going to say, what are you going to do the next four years? We will robustly seize that opportunity."

The details remain closely held. Presidential advisers said elements of the plan have been agreed to, with debate still underway on others. Fighting terrorism remains paramount to the president, and on domestic issues there is a consensus outside the administration that Bush is likely to renew his call for changes in Social Security.

Outside analysts are in far less agreement on whether, beyond calling for making his tax cuts permanent, Bush will push for significant tax law revisions or simplification. Bush's education focus may shift to higher education, while his health care agenda is likely to focus on some combination of medical liability reform, efforts to curb rising costs with the help of information technology and programs to reduce the number of Americans without health insurance.

5. But you only quoted/listed 4 sites not 5
Isn't Sangria partaken with Tequila? If so, be careful with that stuff.

A while back I finally broke my habits of watching "TV" news, most of us have common views of the lack of value from that source. I'm now leaving behind my local newspapers because as you indicate in your post the on-line newspapers are plentiful and oh so easy to access.

Anyway good morning to ya and enjoy your coffee.

6. Yeah, you're right. The Sun Times was #5, but it was just fluff.
Last night, it was just sangria for us--and lots of it!

Best coffee in the world: PEETS. If you haven't had one of their many fine blends (French Roast is my favorite), you have no idea what you're missing. And it is strong. As one fine author once wrote in connection with this legal brew: "Anything less than lethal is useless." Especially after a night such as you describe.

As for the news -- It's sort of like reading tea-leaves, isn't it? Do I trust ANYTHING a government employee says, even if reported accurately? There are the words and then there are all the contextualizations, as one poster points out above, which have to come into play to give it meaning. This is all the more so when "the facts" are reported about events. But what is REEEEELLLLY frustratn' is that so much that we SHOULD be told is never told at all or is spoken quietly in a corner where hopefully no one will notice.

We live in what I call a "reality bubble." That is, a particular view of the world that we have been conditioned to see primarily by the ubiquitous media that surrounds and pervades our communications--but also our social discourses from the context within which we think about things and have discussions with others to our daily interactions of commerce. Everything is about 'buying and selling' -- everything is a 'product' to be 'consumed.'

This is NOT the natural order of things, you understand.

It is such a lovely day. The sun is out. The air is pleasantly cool here in the San Francisco Bay Area. High wispy clouds. A pleasant breeze. Why the hell am I sitting here writing this? I don't know. The coffee is absolutely FANTASTIC!!

Edited for spelling and capitalization

11. Me, too. I'm outa here! The world is just going to have to take care
of itself without me for a day or two. I need the sunshine. I need the fresh air and the fresh impressions that come from taking a walk -- looking at the ocean or some redwood trees or some flowers in bloom. Ever notice how everything living is 'fractal' like in its nature; even our own bodies? We are living systems inside a living system. Exchanges of energy -- could OUR COMMERCE ever reflect the natural tendencies toward balance in nature? Is there anyone intelligent enough to put forward an economics not of unlimited growth but of sustainable interaction and growth within a system?

Coffee is a wonderful drug. I'll ponder these things today. But not here.
