Students who took abstinence pledge have righer rates of STDs...
...than those who did not.

There was a recent story on a study that came to that conclusion. If anybody can post a link, they get a kiss... Or a "thank you", your choice.

1. here's a bit on the topic
snip.....

Research carried out in the US suggests 88% of those who sign up for the group go on to break their pledge.

Dr Audrey Simpson, director of the Family Planning Association in Northern Ireland, pointed to this research and said abstinence should be promoted as a positive choice for young people.

"Research has been carried out in America since this sort of programme has been running," she said.

"It shows that in communities where there are higher rates of pledges, those who are wearing the silver rings, that they have got higher rates of sexually transmitted infections because young people are not getting the information.

"Then, if 18 months down the line they don't follow the pledge, they go out and have sex,and they don't know about safer sex."

2. Those who took the pledge, or those who broke their pledge?

Because, you know, if you get STDs by taking a pledge I'm gonna get a little worried ;)

Teens who pledge abstinence have same rate of STDs as those who don't, study finds

JASON STRAZIUSO, Associated Press Writer
Tuesday, March 9, 2004
(03-09) 13:06 PST PHILADELPHIA (AP) --

Teens who make a one-time pledge to remain virgins until marriage catch sexually transmitted diseases about as often as those who don't pledge abstinence, according to a study of the sex lives of 12,000 adolescents.

14. Why not send them to Mars instead? Didn't * say he
wanted to send a manned expediction to Mars? I would certainly recommend that as an ex-pilot, he and his cabal be designated as astronauts and be sent on a one way trip to Mars. We could get them to go by telling them that scientists believe there is gobs of oil there.

15. You're so right.......
I *love* this planet..... it's so beautiful, and so diverse in it's beauty. There's so much to see and delight in.

That cabal doesn't care about such things....... just $$$, so let 'em leave the planet, and make their $$$ elsewhere.

I"m just so sick of all the fighting, and factionalizing, and marginalizing of good people. I just want an escape from it.

We're all too good for this........ why are we bashing each other into oblivion???? Just one more ghetto?

5. God's punishment for them wasting sperm...
...and ova. Don't they know every potential lil' blastocyst is sacred? I wouldn't be at all surprised though. Taking such a pledge, and then failing to live up to it because they are, like, human, would be shame, which might prevent them from taking other precautions. Or they could be like the girl that thinks if she just does anal, she'll still be a virgin. If you don't want to, don't. If you do, well, then don't make promises your libido can't keep.

7. Monty Python had something on that topic
There are Jews in the world.
There are Buddhists.
There are Hindus and Mormons, and then
There are those that follow Mohammed, but
I've never been one of them.
I'm a Roman Catholic,
And have been since before I was born,
And the one thing they say about Catholics is:
They'll take you as soon as you're warm.
You don't have to be a six-footer.
You don't have to have a great brain.
You don't have to have any clothes on. You're
A Catholic the moment Dad came,
Because
Every sperm is sacred.
Every sperm is great.
If a sperm is wasted,
God gets quite irate.

but I found one that shows the same rate of STDs among pledgers and non-pledgers.

8. yes, it is going to take a link to convince me this is true
Edited on Sun Jul-18-04 05:44 PM by TeacherCreature
Without that link, I am not sure why you posted this thread.

On edit: So it is breaking the pledge that causes the problem.

11. to me this seems pretty obvious
kids who put a big store in remain celibate until marriage are not likely to carry around condoms in their wallets - if and when they do "break the pledge" it's most likely to be a spur of the moment thing and they wont have the protection they need. I'm sure they probably know about condoms but they don't have them on them and are to rigid with embarrassment and/or fear to go and buy some.

I find the notion of a "pledge" absolutely bizarre - if you don't want to bonk don't no need to tell the world about it (likewse no need to announce the fact that you are bonking)

13. I would not be surprised if many of them

were "technical virgins" who've engaged in only oral sex, only anal sex, or perhaps both oral and anal sex.

About 17-18 years ago, I was teaching in rural Georgia public schools and we had workshops about AIDS prevention conducted by people from Georgia 's public health department. They told us then that many teenage girls were being seen with STDs, including AIDS, contracted from anal sex or oral sex. Having either anal or oral sex was, they told us, how many girls were keeping their boyfriends happy while, in their minds, retaining their virginity.

I'm so old I remember when girls knew what virginity meant.

18. Can you catch AIDS from ORAL sex ...

I know you can transmit herpes this way. But AIDS is a pretty fragile virus.
