weekend grocery price check --- what did DU find?

I propose a regular weekend thread where we can post what we found at the grocery store in the way of higher prices. Let's document inflation!

Yesterday I went to a Safeway store in Oregon. Here's what I found.

1 gal. whole milk $3.89
a 20 oz. package bacon $6.49!
apples $1.59 per pound
2 lb. Tillamook cheddar cheese $8.49! (usually $4)

the rice I usually buy was up 75 cents since last month!

Then I went to a Kroger-owned store. Prices were better there. 1/2 gal. milk on sale for $1. 1 lb. cheddar cheese $6.98 (still a horrible price). Peaches 69 cents per pound. Butter $2.50 per pound. Saltines 2 4-pack boxes for $1.69.

Anyone?

85% Ground Beef (on sale) 1.87 Lb (good price, value pack only)

Green, Red, or Black Seedless Grapes (on sale) .88 Lb

All your household paper, cleaning, and misc. goods are way more expensive than a year ago.

With the exception of the ground beef, all meats, even the sale prices are ridiculous. Alot higher than a year ago.

4. So Safeway

is also screwing its customers with price hikes? That's interesting, considering they busted their union down here in California, and are reaping record profits. DUers, Safeway is is anti-labor, and my husband and I have boycotted them for six months or so. They forced a two -tier system on their employees with the goal of weakening the union, and raised their health care costs at the same time they were making huge, huge profits. If their prices are also not competitive, we should not be supporting them.:grr: I do like your idea about documenting inflation. We are certainly not going to hear about this from the media.

7. Cucumbers: 89 cents for ONE in MD

It's a cucumber, for crying out loud! Seems they used to be 89 cents for three of them.

(Fortunately, my neighbor came over this afternoon with a bucket of them from his garden!)

8. Veggies are no longer "seasonal".. That's one of my big gripes..

I long for the days of "in season", local/regional fruits and veggies..

These days, fruit is picked far from ripe (tasteless) ..artifivally ripened and sent all over the world..

It's all about price fixing, folks.. The price spike of Chilean grapes in January is not nearly as noticable, if you are already used to paying.."The low, low price of $1.99 a lb when they are "in season"..

If the growers actually got the increased price, it would not be so bad, but the extra cost is actually for transportation/marketing/etc.

Lettuce is grown all over california, yet we still pay over $1.00 a head.. Tomatoes (the decent ones) are $2.99 a lb..

I CANNOT believe the prices at the grocery...or anywhere else for that matter. My grocery bill just keeps climbing everytime I go.

I don't have a list yet so can I bookmark this thread, go do my shopping and come back with my input?????

I've been bitching about this for months. It's unbelievable.

I live right "next door" to the "salad bowl" of America (On Monterey Bay) and the produce is astronomical. Sooooooo, I'm growing my own! Woohoo I have cukes that TASTE like cucumbers, Lettuce coming out of my ears, squashes (2 kinds), melons, tomatoes, carrots, onions and will continue planting into the cooler season. I just started this year and so far it's been a huge success. I live in a duplex with a rather large yard but I'm using containers to grow in. It's easy that way and doesn't require all sorts of tools and digging. My stuff is organic too...nearly zero bugs. Try it folks. You can do it on your balconies if ya have to. "VICTORY GARDENS" or Freedom Gardens.

Meat is another thing altogether. It is very high. Cheese, eggs, milk, meats of all sorts. I'll be back with my list. :D

Dairy and meat prices have skyrocketed.

My local Krogers had 8oz. bars of store brand cheese for $.99 in March. They were $1.67 this week *on sale.* Ground round was a special at $.99/lb. It's a special this week at $2.29/lb.

People riding on the financial edge are in deep shit.
