Do you really think Martha's going to jail?....
Sure, she got 'hung out to dry' by the Repubs but built into many of these 'rich people' trails is the 'something' that will be 'wrong' for the appeal....

This will be kicked past the election, Kerry will be President, 'something' will be found to be 'wrong' with the trail, a new trail will be needed and the prosecutors will 'decline' to prosecute again.....

Martha will walk free, and there you have it...more justice, 'Rich American' style.....justice based upon the thickness of your billfold.....

1. I think she'll go to jail
because she's not one of THEIR rich people like Ken Lay. She's a woman and a Dem. so they can act like they're being tough on corp fraud meanwhile letting the REAL crooks who stole from millions of people get away with it.

4. This conviction was bogus
I think she'll win on appeal, bargain down to a fine and probation.

After all, she was convicted of lying about a crime she was never charged with.

Her codefendant, who was charged with insider trading and convicted of it, was given the same minimum sentence Stewart was, which leads me to believe there were problems with his case, too.

She'll always have a rap sheet with a conviction on it, but I honestly can't see her going to prison. There's no damn reason in the world to put her in prison.

Lay hurt millions. He's the one who belongs in prison.

2. Well she got 5 months
and a $30,000 fine which I thought was bullshit. Thats like 20 bucks to you or me. After her little speech outside the courthouse I think she should have got no jail time and a $3,000,000,000 fine. In her mind insider trading and lying to the feds is not a crime... This will be easier to judge when Ken Lay gets his sentance..

6. left is right is right
Martha's a democrat who made a huge donation to dems and they made her pay. That was her crime.

Punks who line the pockets of pukes get pardoned.

7. Far more likely than Rush.....Ken Lay....
Cheney, Rumsfeld, Wolfowitz, Perle, or any of the rest of this stinking cabal (unfortunately).

I'd gladly eat my words if that ended up NOT being the case...

8. She'll go to jail. It's the minimum, but she deserves it.
Martha knew better! She isn't some inmocent little girl who was duped by a rich guy. I don't think she should have gotten a LONG time in jail (and she didn't) but she needs to recognize when you break the law, there are consequences. What she did with the stock sale isn't what got her into trouble, it was lying to cover her "possible" wrong doing. It's going to be a tough lesson for her, but I hope it's effective....not only on her, but the rest of the "connected community" too. Sometimes you just have to obey the laws.

14. Shouldn't you write the entire Bush family and recommend
the same thing, obeying the laws?

16. Writing the Bush family won't do anything at all.
I do suggest writing our Reps., and Sens. to tell them how you feel. John the Ashcroft too! Howard Dean got the Dems to crawl out of their hiding holes and fight a little bit, but they will respond to a lot of clamor from the people who put them in office.

I am an accountant, and spent my entire life insisting on obeying the laws and making sure everyone in our company did the same. I've lost 2 jobs because of that attitude, but I have no regrets. I really believe if you break the law, you pay the price. More people have to insist on that, and it will happen.

17. Interesting. I am a retired bookkeeper with the same mindset
about following the rules. I believe that you have lost two jobs trying to do the right thing because somewhere after 1980, they changed the rules and it got really hard to balance the ledger with a clear conscience.

18. I don't think it had anything to do with rules.
I was fired when I refused to record unethical entries. They weren't illegal, or fraudulent, but would have enabled some execs to get bonuses they didn't deserve. I'm not sorry I stood my ground, and will not be manipulated. I always got another job, and one of the 2 companies is out of business now, bacause of other poor business decisions.

The rules didn't change, but the oversite did. The SEC simply had blinders on, and to some degree still does.

23. I thought that's what I said, something to do with a lack of ethics.
I did state it differently. It's really widespread now.

19. I agree that Martha knew what she was doing was wrong,
but I think a hefty fine and probation would be in order in her case. What I want to know is why hasn't any member of the CEO's immediate family, mainly his daughter who sold 2 million shares that day, been charged with inside trading? There were a whole lot of people in his immediate circle of friends/family that sold their stock that very same day so is that ok with everybody? The whole thing smells really bad.

9. Martha would do a lot more good by doing
community service than in jail. Personally I'm glad that she'll be out 'til after the election so she can vote!

11. she's doing time
not a doubt about it. martha, right or wrong, is a sacrificial goat to divert attention from the real grabbers, +she's a warning to dem's not to push the admin about prosecuting their own.

she's going to do very soft time in an FPC (fed prison camp), minimum security. it's going to open her eyes even further, & strengthen her support for liberalism.

i got a feeling they'll wish they hadn't gang-banged the lady.

You have it--exactly. But I don't mind; in fact I think it would be great. MS does not deserve to be in jail. As far as any of us lying to prosecutors or the gov't, people lie to them all the time and nothing happens.
