Mississippi DNC reorganized and ready to rumble with Republican machine
MISSISSIPPI'S DEMOCRATIC PARTY

Reorganized and ready to rumble with the Republican machine

By BILL MINOR

JACKSON

When you talk about the Mississippi Democratic Party, you have to think of what humorist Will Rogers once said, that he didn't belong to an organized political party, he was a Democrat.

Now even Mississippi Democrats have come to realize that in the 21st century political arena, driven by money and organization, they face a well-oiled Republican state machinery. So state Democrats are launching a campaign to re-invigorate the state party under new leadership in an effort to keep the Republican apparatus from winning more public offices.

Last weekend, Democrats tapped former U.S. Rep. Wayne Dowdy, a well-known force in state politics, to take over the party chairmanship and generate sorely needed financial support for Democratic candidates, especially for the Legislature.

They are aware, too, that Republican Gov. Haley Barbour, in whacking 65,000 needy and working-poor Mississippians off state Medicaid rolls, has handed Democrats the best ammunition they've had in years to rally the troops.

1. "whacking 65,000 needy and working-poor"
"whacking 65,000 needy and working-poor
Mississippians off state Medicaid rolls, has handed Democrats the best ammunition they've had in years
to rally the troops."

I gotta ask ya........ what "ammunition"?

What are the Dem plans to address this?

What is the outreach to these "needy and working-poor"?

I ask because this is NOT a popular issue with DEMs anymore.

I've been soundly attacked here trying to point out that poor folks often don't vote anymore, because the DEMs abandoned them, and have been ALLOWING all these cuts.

IS the *assumption* being made that these poor folk will automatically vote, or is there going to be some REAL attempts to address this issue, and form a workable plan to rectify the situation?

Or, is it just a handy issue to use, then forget.

Sorry about the cynicism.... I really am. But, I've seen too much callousness right here at DU to have much faith anymore.

3. well, as someone who has lived in
the south all my life, I can honestly say that there needs to be some "ammunition" to WAKE-UP those who ARE NOT VOTING, even though I don't like the way it's being done. It's ironic how the south benefits from the Democratic policies, but either they don't vote and remain complacent, or they vote Republican, which continues to feed oppression.

I got in argument with someone the other day who said "the Democrats have ruined the south with their constant need to keep people on welfare." We have to change this kind of thinking.

4. In defense of the state dems, they have fought for the folks
Edited on Mon Jul-19-04 12:19 AM by merh
we have a repuke control senate and the most vile, evil repuke gov imaginable. Haley Barbour is a cookie cutter replica of *. He is one of theirs, being groomed to step in when */f'u leave. He worked in the WH for Raygun, was head of the RNC, is co-owner of one of the richest lobbying firms in DC and left his firm to "come home to MS" to help us. :puke: (He is following * road map in TX. Divide & Privatize.)

The dems have tried to get a special session called to have this matter reconsidered, but it is the gov that calls them and he will not. The legislative session this year was so partisan and filled with battles over tort reform, budget cuts to educations, no funding to Dept of Human services, and then medicaid.

The state dems have been battling and this article is correct, Barbour has harmed the GOP. On a tv talk show tonight, the callers who said they had voted for * but will vote for K said it is because of Barbour and the medicaid votes. Momentum is building as the citizens have found Barbour & the GOP have cut some basic programs that are vital to MS. Medicaid and Education. People are angry as hell.

There is a recall petition being circulated to recall Barbour. We have no laws but the AFL-CIO the main group circulating the petition claim their lawyers believe that we have a shot and can be successful.

Don't blame the state elected dems, they are fighting like hell. There has been little organization but they have not given up.

You do not know what it is like to be a liberal or a dem or anti * in this state. It ain't easy. Check out this thread to get some idea about the things we face.

5. Mississippi has such a long history
of oppression and it sounds like Barbour is trying to keep it that way. There needs to be a serious wake-up call to voters to get this crap ended.

8. Barbour may have sounded that wake up call for us...
He is a cocky member of the * circle (forgot to mention that he was instrumental in * gubernatorial and presidential campaigns as an adviser and lobbyist). He saw them as invincible, so he assumed he was invincible. I hope the people do wake up, but like you said we have such a long, ingrained and inbreed history of oppression. It is serious and maybe voters affected will take it seriously now. I pray.

6. I'm glad there are actual efforts being made.
It's time for *ALL* these concerned people to hit the streets. If the deaths from war is important, so are the deaths of Citizens Of Our Own Country.

No, I do NOT know what it's like there...... that's why I was asking. If you read my words, I said I was cynical because of the lacadaisical attitude by Dems *in this country*, and from what has been said to me right here on DU.

As a victim myself, it has hurt deeply to be dismissed in the way I have been, so surely you can understand my strong emotions about this issue.

I hope you can get this idiot recalled.

7. Sorry, Kanary, but Mississippi doesn't have a "recall provision"
The petition they are circulating is merely to express disgust with the Barbour administration and will have no practical effect.

My dumbass fellow citizens willingly voted for this asshole, defeating a decent, education oriented Democratic governor. Now, many of them whine that they didn't realize what "reforming" Medicaid meant. Many teachers now moan that they "didn't know....." Sorry, but Haley Barbour was honest about his intentions. He said he'd cut government and BY GOD he did! He cut medical care, and education, and innoculations, and perscriptions, and pay raises and state employees.....

Well, just maybe, you ought to GET A F*****G CLUE before you vote, you jackasses!

11. You are correct, we do not have a "recall provision"
but the AFL-CIO and the others that are circulating the petition will fight like hell to make Barbour's life miserable. They promise to take it to court and to fight like hell, so it should be interesting.

Barbour could be the best thing that happened to the dem party. If he pisses off enough folks, we may gain control of the legislature and even have a shot at pulling votes for dems in national elections.

We have to regain the majority in the legislature to fight him, because if we have the majority, he is basically useless.

9. I understand your strong emotions and I thank you for your concern...
I know I am not giving up on my state or my nation, and there are plenty of folks in MS who share my feelings.

Thanks again.

2. Some of us were just talking about the under class and their
needs..needing to be addressed. If the Dems take notice of this atrocity in Mississippi and run with it, it WILL be a great thing!

I wish them well down there. Do the right thing Dems and we'll back your play! Go for it Mississippi!! :bounce:
