They should have been focusing on terror attacks, instead. But Rove never gave them that as a talking point, because on Sept. 6, 2001, the strategy was to focus on sharks and Condit and not on Bush and Bin Laden.

Twenty-eight children in the United States were killed by falling television sets between 1990 and 1997. As the Statistical Assessment Service, a nonprofit organization that analyzes the media's use of statistics, points out, that is four times as many people as were killed by great white shark attacks in the 20th century. Loosely speaking, this means that "watching 'Jaws' on TV is more dangerous than swimming in the Pacific."

4. It's kind of creepy

seeing that cover, knowing just a few months later 3,000 people would be killed and two of the tallest towers in the US would be destroyed.

It's shameful how inept the media was. Sharks! Gary Condit!

It's even more shameful how inept (and I would say criminally negligent) the administration was.

BTW, does anyone have a link to a copy of an online paper from 9/10 (I doubt any are still up)? I would be interesting to see what the headlines were the day before.

I mean, aside from the blatant censorship and jingoistic war-drum-beating, and totally skewed coverage... Does anyone have any doubt that they're chomping at the bit to serve up 24-7 coverage of nothing but Laci, Kobe, and Jacko? I'm sure that was the plan, originally. But the shit-storm in Iraq got so bad, they couldn't totally ignore it, but if they can keep a lit on the 95% of the Abu Ghraib stuff that we haven't seen and most folks haven't heard about, they will...

The Media isn't just "inept", they're a well-oiled machine--- designed, essentially, to distract the American People with bright shiny objects and buzzing, whirring noises, so that they don't ask any pressing questions about who's actually running the show.

8. God, the summer of the shark....

I was just turning 18, and it was through the power of the evil shark attacks that my blinders concerning the state of our media started to lift. I guess you could say it was the catalyst I needed to begin questioning everything they reported, which worked out heading into 9/11 and their two-year non-stop idolizing of our Fearless Leader.
