Anti-Gay letter in local paper from local fundamentalist "leader"...
http://www.cornwallseawaynews.com/index.cfm?INCLUDE=guestbook_view.cfm&guest_id=2312

The Real Agenda of Pride Cornwall: Acceptance

The worst of it...

"By the goodness and grace of God, the Western world’s moral standard is still based upon the Word of God. Whether or not the gay community accepts this fact, it’s their problem and sin. Pride Cornwall wants to be the exception to the rule. Why should we allow that? We do not allow others that choose a sinful habit or lifestyle to get by, or get off the hook, do we? We hold them accountable, and demand change. This is true of the drunkard, the thief, the wife beater, etc., and should be of the homosexual community also. If the gay community wants acceptance, then they need to repent of their sinful, wicked lifestyle and begin to conform to a Biblical lifestyle."

1. In Harrison AR, they had a mass mailing
with something along similar lines-only the fundies there included 'proof' that blacks were 'subhuman' and that 'God wants the races seperated'as well as the anti-gay tirade. The letter was condemned by the City Counsel as not being representative of the area.

16. Zinc AR
is where the KKK central is located. But I am serious when I say the Harrison City Counsel voted to condemn the mailings. They are seriously trying to change the image of the area. I work in a small business in Harrison, and we have had African American employees. My boss told me that if anyone gave them a hard time, we didn't want their business. Other small businessmen I've been in contact with feel very uncomfortable about the KKK being around, and feel it hurts the town.

2. As usual, the fundamentalist author seems incapable
of making even gross moral distinctions. We don't accept the "drunkard" because the "drunkard", behind the wheel of an automobile, has the proven capacity to harm others. (Other than that, it's not clear to me that American society cares much about restricting alcohol.) The "thief" very directly harms others by misappropriating others' property for themselves. The wife-beater harms another physically (although, in the typical fundamentalist viewpoint, a woman's right to person is minimal).

But, all this is purely academic; I don't know why I bother even reiterating this kind of argument. They'll never change.

Maybe I'm just cranky this morning  :donut:

3. I was at the Ottawa Pride parade
The Cornwall organizers were passing out flyers, and I knew they were going to run into this kind of crap. My girlfriend and I made the decision on the spot that we were going to go to Cornwall for their celebration. They're going to need all the support they can get in that redneck little burg.

I also hope to start an Ontario New Democratic Youth club in my riding, but I'll have to bring it up at our next executive meeting before I pursue it any further.

5. Oh, my! So the gay community wants "acceptance", do they?
Why should we allow people to eat pork? Why should we allow men to cut thier hair? Why should we allow people to sell & wear blended wool clothes? Why should we allow people to eat shellfish? Why should we accept handicapped people?

The Most Holy Bible says that these people must be put to death. God doesn't make any distictions. We can't accept them; we have to kill them.

6. Ah, yes, let me submit to a biblical lifestyle...
I'll quit my job and give myself as property to the next man that asks.

Why do they allow such bigoted letters to be published? Isn't there some sort of standard? I never see racist letters in the paper (that at least are not so obviously racist as this is bigoted). Am I wrong? I really don't understand this.

7. They've published some pretty sickening stuff...
Today the Standard-Freeholder published the same letter the Seaway News did.

Last year the Freeholder published another pastor who blamed last summer's B.C. forest fire epidemic on same-sex marriage.

Both papers have taken editorial positions in favour of the pride parade but haven't really said much about marriage.

The reason much of this far-right tripe gets published is that this region has so much apathy that the papers are sometimes desperate to fill their editorial pages.

11. Letters like this MUST be printed, Mis.
About two and a half years ago, the Knoxville (TN) News-Sentinel printed on its front page a photo of a Nazi flag at a white supremacy rally. The paper got several angry letters in response.

This letter was written to the editor of the News-Sentinel in response to those who criticized the paper for printing the photo:

"While I understand the loathing and shock some readers have experienced upon seeing the Nazi symbol on the front page of the News-Sentinel, I feel I must offer a comment to the contrary.

"People with decent hearts and sound ethics will always recoil at the sight of bigotry. Such symbols remind us of how deep the evil of hatred can affect the very essence of humanity.

"I submit, however, that such symbols should not be buried, ignored or denied for one simple reason: Bigotry cannot flourish when displayed in the glaring light of day.

"Such hatred grows when hidden from view; it needs darkness to grow. Exposure to the light of freedom an to the hearts of people who shun the ideas such bigotry espouses will surely cause the evil that is hate to wilt and die.

"I applaud your decision to expose the faces of hatred. I hope for a day when every face of every American embraces everyone of every distinction and revels in the glorious diversity that makes us strong."

Let all the papers in the country print all the homophobic letters they like. Bigotry cannot flourish when displayed in the glaring light of day.

13. I agree with you in part BV, but a letter to the editor
that reeks of racism from an individual person, is not the same as a photo which is in essence reporting "on" racism. Tell me... have you ever seen an actual letter to the editor that calls blacks degenerates and sinners and worthless human beings?

I think a story reporting on some asshole who treats a gay person with the contempt that this contributor clearly has would be more effective in educating people than an opinionated screed that some people will probably agree with, giving them more justification for their own bigotry.

No?

14. "ever seen an actual letter to the editor that calls blacks" -- no
You're not going to find such a letter in a 21st century newspaper.

But I'd be willing to peruse American newspapers of the 18th, 19th, and the first three quarters of the 20th centuries to find parallels. Slavery and racial bigotry of those times are analogous to today's homophobia, so we'd have to search the newspapers of those times.

Still, you make a good point.

But how can someone justifiably tell a newspaper NOT to print a letter like the one the newbie posted?

The Real Agenda of Cavalry Baptist: Hate

Upon reading Pastor Tom Newton’s homophobic rant (“The Real Agenda of Pride Cornwall: Acceptance”, July 16), I was filled with shock, with dismay, and with disgust, stemming from the fact that anyone, let alone a community leader, would have the nerve to produce such hate-laden venom. Especially galling is that Pastor Newton makes not one reference to the ideals of love, mercy, and compassion, all of which are central tenets of a Christian worldview and of a Christian criticism of behaviour perceived as sinful. With that said, two salient points in Pastor Newton’s letter remain to be addressed: First, his comparison of Pride Cornwall members (and by extension, GLBT individuals in general) to other groups that rightfully feel society’s scorn, and second, his broader and more dangerous point that individuals and groups ought not to be accepted by society should they not adhere to a rigid moral and doctrinal code.

Pastor Newton wrongly assumes that society’s scorn on thieves, spouse abusers, and alcohol abusers is rooted in the inflexible moral code of fundamentalist Christianity, thus concluding that GLBT individuals deserve the same treatment. The reality, however, is that thieves are condemned for their misappropriation of another’s gains (which for this purpose will be assumed to be rightful), spouse abusers for the physical and emotional harm suffered by their victim (and should there be children produced by the relationship, to a third-party and to society as a whole), and alcohol abusers for the short-term (the oft-deadly consequences of drunk driving) and the long-term (the destruction of both individuals and families resulting from alcoholism) consequences of their addiction. The commonality of this scorn thus lies in its pragmatism: All three of these groups cause harm to people, to property, and to society in a manner that is far more tangible than fear-mongering stories of Hellfire and brimstone could ever be. Obviously, one’s sexual orientation and gender identity does none of these things.

More chilling, however, is Pastor Newton’s argument that those who refuse to accept the blindly fundamentalist Christianity of he and his sect (arrogantly referred to as God’s moral order or other similarly pretentious metaphors) ought not to be accepted by society. Pastor Newton’s worldview, should it ever be implemented in Canadian society, would have dangerous implications not only for GLBT individuals and their friends and allies, but also for the vast majority of Canadians, including many who share his views on homosexuality and on same-sex relationships but otherwise have different value systems and religious beliefs. Similar totalitarian worldviews, over the past century, have dominated the Soviet Union, Nazi Germany, China, North Korea, Iran, Saudi Arabia, Duplessis’ Quebec, and parts of the southern United States prior to civil rights and racial integration. In every one of these cases the consequences for virtually anyone, particularly those societies’ most vulnerable individuals and groups, have been devastating. Regardless of race, religion, gender, ethnic origin, sexual orientation, and political ideology, I and the vast majority of Canadians will ensure that Pastor Newton’s dictatorial worldview will never become Canada’s worst nightmare.

12. Someone call Homeland Security!
Wow, someone call homeland security. These guys webnt to the same Afghan letter writing school. If this ain't suspicious, I don't know what is.

In the Name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful,
"Permission to fight (against disbelievers) is given to those (believers) who are fought against, because they have been wronged and surely, Allah is Able to give them (believers) victory"

"Those who believe, fight in the Cause of Allah, and those who disbelieve, fight in the cause of Taghut (anything worshipped other than Allah e.g. Satan). So fight you against the friends of Satan; ever feeble is indeed the plot of Satan."

Some American writers have published articles under the title 'On what basis are we fighting?' These articles have generated a number of responses, some of which adhered to the truth and were based on Islamic Law, and others which have not. Here we wanted to outline the truth - as an explanation and warning - hoping for Allah's reward, seeking success and support from Him.

While seeking Allah's help, we form our reply based on two questions directed at the Americans:

(Q1) Why are we fighting and opposing you?
Q2)What are we calling you to, and what do we want from you?

As for the first question: Why are we fighting and opposing you? The answer is very simple:

(1) Because you attacked us and continue to attack us.

a) You attacked us in Palestine:

(i) Palestine, which has sunk under military occupation for more than 80 years. The British handed over Palestine, with your help and your support, to the Jews, who have occupied it for more than 50 years; years overflowing with oppression, tyranny, crimes, killing, expulsion, destruction and devastation. The creation and continuation of Israel is one of the greatest crimes, and you are the leaders of its criminals. And of course there is no need to explain and prove the degree of American support for Israel. The creation of Israel is a crime which must be erased. Each and every person whose hands have become polluted in the contribution towards this crime must pay its*price, and pay for it heavily.

(ii) It brings us both laughter and tears to see that you have not yet tired of repeating your fabricated lies that the Jews have a historical right to Palestine, as it was promised to them in the Torah. Anyone who disputes with them on this alleged fact is accused of anti-semitism. This is one of the most fallacious, widely-circulated fabrications in history. The people of Palestine are pure Arabs and original Semites. It is the Muslims who are the inheritors of Moses (peace be upon him) and the inheritors of the real Torah that has not been changed. Muslims believe in all of the Prophets, including Abraham, Moses, Jesus and Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon them all. If the followers of Moses have been promised a right to Palestine in the Torah, then the Muslims are the most worthy nation of this.

When the Muslims conquered Palestine and drove out the Romans, Palestine and Jerusalem returned to Islaam, the religion of all the Prophets peace be upon them. Therefore, the call to a historical right to Palestine cannot be raised against the Islamic Ummah that believes in all the Prophets of Allah (peace and blessings be upon them) - and we make no distinction between them.

"sinful, wicked" stuff that is happening. Someone should shoot this letter to him or to the paper there.

------------------

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from your letter.

When someone tries to defend the homosexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind him that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination. End of debate.

Since you are so knowledgeable, I do need some advice from you, however, regarding some of the specific laws and how to best follow them.

a) When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odor for the Lord (Lev 1: 9). The problem is my neighbors. They claim the odor is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

b) I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21: 7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

c) I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of menstrual uncleanliness (Lev 15:19-24). The problem is, how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offense.

d) Lev. 25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighboring nations. A friend of mine claims that this applies to Mexicans, but not Canadians. Can you clarify? Why can't I own Canadians?

e) I have a neighbor who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death. Am I morally obligated to kill him myself?

f) A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an Abomination (Lev 11:10 ), it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this?

g) Lev 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle room here?

h) Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev 19:27. How should they die?

i) I know from Lev 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

j) My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev 19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot. Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? (Lev 24:10-16) Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

I know you have studied these things extensively, so I am confident you can help.

Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging. As you say, we do not allow others that choose a sinful habit or lifestyle to get by, or get off the hook, do we?

This is adapted from the "Letter to Dr. Laura" that circulated via the internet several years ago.
