I'd imagine that, since he built part of his self-image as "the cool rebel" (while repressing the knowledge that he relied on his family wealth and connections entirely), he's got quite a bit of conflict just dealing with being the ultimate authority figure! He's the one who always declined to take part, with a smirk on his face, making fun of those (like Al Gore) who did decide to get involved. And now he's the butt of all this criticism and speculation.

Even when a leader is doing well, public life can be cruel -- and he sure isn't doing well! His handlers try to keep him from smarting off or getting aggressive in public (the usual ways he would deal with stress, in the old days). But it still shows. If he was bent out of shape with the SNL parodies of him, he's probably raging now!

One way in which he's tried to defuse criticism is through co-opting possible critics with his "charm offensives" (his dad did this too). He was very sweet to the guy who portrays him on Leno's show, and was rewarded by flattering press accounts of "what a good sport Dubya is". (Actually, that actor is a conservative Christian fundamentalist, and Bush probably figured he was part of the "base" and could be trusted.) But his overtures to Will Ferrell were rebuffed -- Ferrell refused to have a photo-op with him, though Bush's people phoned him repeatedly and even tried to force Lorne Michaels to arrange it! And Bush knows very well that Michael Moore isn't going to go all soft if he arranges a surprise birthday party for Michael or something.

I read an account that after LBJ left office, he didn't like leaving his ranch because he was dismayed by the sight of anti-war protesters. And arguably LBJ wasn't as dangerous as Bush! Aides try a lot harder these days to shield their bosses from criticism, so I don't think it'll come to that -- George W. cowering at the Rancho Facado -- but that would be lovely.

He could simultaneously avenge his dad's 1992 defeat, AND outdo him at the same time. And if Poppy were jealous, he wouldn't be able to show it, because it's just not "done" in that aristocratic circle, for a father to be anything but proud of a son who's bested his accomplishments.

Not that George W. listens to his dad's advice, but he'd be impossible to live with after a triumph like that. Excuse the Freudian aspects here, but he'd have symbolically done away with "the weak father" and supplanted him -- something that Bar Bush set him up for so many years ago, by relying on him to be the boss of his younger siblings, with Dad away from home so much.
