"Cheney Slams Kerry, Edwards on Malpractice"

COLUMBIA, Mo. (AP) - Vice President Dick Cheney criticized the Democratic ticket on Monday, arguing that John Kerry and John Edwards have opposed changes to the medical malpractice insurance system because they are too close to trial lawyers.

During a question-and-answer session with Bush-Cheney backers, the vice president said the administration is pushing to cap the amounts from large court judgments for what he called "non-economic suffering."

"Both Senators Edwards and Kerry have consistently voted against medical liability reform. They don't want to see reform of that system. I think it's because, frankly, they are too close to the plaintiff's attorneys that benefit from the system and the way it operates today," Cheney said.

Vice presidential candidate Edwards was a trial lawyer who made millions before his election to the Senate in 1998. During his unsuccessful bid for the party nomination, he raised at least $9 million from lawyers from January 2003 until he withdrew from the race in early March. Edwards took in about $22 million total.

Cheney doesn't want any changes to this country's energy policies because he's too close to the oil companies.

4. If Cheney had a misfortune
as a result of malpractice he sure as hell would sue for as much as he could get.

All the Republicans think this is a good issue but it's a phoney issue.

7. Exactly my thought
it seems to be the Republican way. Until it hits close to home, the hell with everyone else.

Stem cell research is one issue that is a good example. If Cheney had a family member, let's say a grandchild with a disease that stem cell research could help cure, you know he would be for supporting it.

5. Cheney.Remember your backed Boy Mel Martinez??

Pot Meet Kettle............got a hang-up on Edwards but support your own trial lawyer in the Fl Sen. Race...........two faced bastard!!

McCollum brands Martinez 'trial lawyer' like Edwards

Republican Senate candidate Bill McCollum on Tuesday quickly labeled rival Mel Martinez "the John Edwards of Florida" for his past work as a trial lawyer.

McCollum provided a link to an Internet ad showing Martinez and Edwards sharing the label "liberal trial lawyer."

"The similarities between Martinez and Edwards are striking, and a Martinez candidacy would greatly hamper our ability to present a unified message," said McCollum campaign manager Matt Williams. "Quite frankly, sending such blatantly mixed signals would be bad politics and potentially damaging to the president."

snip

Gov. Jeb Bush called it "incorrect" to liken Martinez to Edwards and said the Republican nominee would not be helped by a primary fight "based on accusations and innuendo."

"Mel Martinez was a successful plaintiff's lawyer, but he's a proven conservative," Bush said. "His views are conservative. He's a Republican. He's in the mainstream of political thought in our state, just as McCollum is."

8. I suspect
that a lot of the wailing and gnashing of teeth about the malpractice insurance issue is a smokescreen to cover the fact that insurance companies lost a ton of money when the economy tanked and theyre making it up by jacking up premiums.

Would anyone who knows more about the insurance industry like to comment as to whether I'm on the right track? Thanks!
