9. Hang in there Pam!!!
I have been off the things for thirteen months!

It has not been easy I must admit. But is worth it in so many ways.

Yes, I still miss them at times, but I truly believe that this "psychological dependency" that I still have will eventually disappear.

I smoked for 41 years and must admit it was a very big part of my everyday life.

Hopefully, your habit was not as long as mine! You'll do fine! Just keep at it ONE DAY AT A TIME!!!

11. MUCH better!
The first week was really hard for me, and the second week wasn't exactly easy, but now there are hours between cravings where I don't think about cigarettes at all. When the cravings do come, they only last a minute or so and they're not overwhelming like they were those first few weeks.

There are a lot of 'online diary' type things on the net where people posted their day by day experiences while they were in the process of quitting, and reading those helped me a lot. I had read a bunch of pamphlets and stuff that talked about how there would only be 5 or 6 cravings a day that would last three minutes, and as far as I could tell that was all total bullshit cause those first few days were one huge constant anxiety ridden craving that never ended! Reading the diaries assured me that other people had experienced that same thing, and it really would get easier with time. I would give you a link, but I was so spaced out during that time, I can't remember which ones I even read!

I can tell you this. It's been three weeks and I feel great. I still want a cigarette sometimes, but I just tell myself that if I want to start smoking again I can..I just have to wait till I'm 80. I also remind myself everytime the cravings hit that my money is no longer going to support the tobacco industry!

Good luck..you're almost past the hard stuff! PM me is you need some moral support! :)

4. Good for you.
I've been tobbacco free for eleven years now. The craving does go away eventually if you can tough through it. Now as far as those above mentioned idiots, they could still make me very unpleasant.

12. Oh, that is terrific!
Being a smoker myself who desperately wants to quit, I can say I truly admire you. Keep up the great work! I'm rooting for you. Are you using anything to help you quit? If so and it's helping, let me know because that's my next big goal.

:kick:
(a kick for kicking the habit!)

13. Lots of gum
and the nicotrol inhaler for the really tough cravings, but it burns my throat... so I try not to use it much

15. I think I am going to ramp up and buy lots of gum.
When I pick a day to quit I'll have plenty. I am going to use the nicoderm patches, too.

Keep chewing that gum and breathing fresh air.

17. Sounds like a great time to call your local media outlets...
...and demand they start reporting (fill in any news) instead of wasting time on fascist propaganda for the traitors in our White House.

19. I can't even begin to know
how hard it is to quit smoking, but I DO know that it came as a struggle to my dad (died of emphysema) and now to my husband. He always says he wants to quit, but struggles with it. I just want him to be around to see our kids grown.

I wish you much luck and know you can do it. :)

20. A couple things to think about
the urges will not last more than three minutes. At first the urges come fairly often but as the days go by they come less and less and do not last more than three minutes. You should be able to make it through that. After the first week the actual physical addiction will be over. After that it is purely mental. Conjur up all of the reasons you want to quit and repeat them to yourself as a mantra. It is a form of self hypnosis. Tell yourself that you have an iron will and every time you defeat the urges the iron becomes harder. It can be done. I know how hard it is but it is worth every second of misery you may go through. After it is a done deal you will look back on this as your greatest accomplishment and be extremely proud of yourself. good luck

23. Congrats! A note about the gum:
I've been chewing it off and on for over 15 years (I am weak). My doc says the only thing bad about it is the price. It is pricey.

Search around online and buy Nicotrol gum (generic Nicorette) from Australia for half the price here in the states (I think its about $15 for a box of 105 pieces) they have free shipping and it arrives in about 4 days.

My "recent" will power came when I looked at my mom and her twin sister. They are 80. My aunt has been on oxygen for 10 years, my mom is very healthy. My mom quit when she was 50, my aunt quit after she had to go on oxygen. I keep thinking how embarrassing it would be to carry a tank with you wherever you go!
