I looked up "fascism" in my dictionary...
Edited on Tue Jul-20-04 10:05 PM by gristy
It has only one definition for the word when it starts with a small f:

1. A philosophy or system of government that advocates or exercises a dictatorship of the extreme right, typically through the merging of state and business leadership, together with an ideology of belligerent nationalism.

This is from my American Heritage Dictionary, copyright 1976.

Any questions?

on edit, here's some more food for thought:

What if a "respected" (sorry, I just have to put it in quotes...) member of Congress said the f-word (no, not that f-word) in a speech? What if he just layed it out there. Not real complicated, but labeled the current resident of the WH as the head of a fascist regime and clearly stated his/her reasons for this judgement. And I don't mean a 14-point summary of all their evil-doing (though that is a very good list, Jerseygirltoo). I mean a much shorter synopsis. Something that cuts to the heart of it in a minimum of words. FORCE the press to take notice. Force the RW and their press to argue that he is wrong (or right!). Get the friggin' debate out in the open!

4. That's an old dictionary.
Didn't you get the new version yet? The new entry for fascism simply has pictures of Kerry, Gore, Dean, Michael Moore and Hitler. Here, I'll destroy your old one for you and you can take my copy of the 11th edition.

12. Good question.
In 1976 he was probably too juiced up to pose for the picture, though. :)

6. Got an encyclopedia? It gets scarier.....
Edited on Tue Jul-20-04 09:44 PM by GloriaSmith
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fascism

In an article in the 1932 Enciclopedia Italiana, written by Giovanni Gentile and attributed to Benito Mussolini, fascism is described as a system in which "The State not only is authority which governs and molds individual wills with laws and values of spiritual life, but it is also power which makes its will prevail abroad."

My 7th grade History teacher WAS right. History really does repeat itself.

on edit: more interesting info....

The Nazi movement spoke of class based society as the enemy and wanted to unify the racial element above established classes, whereas the Fascist movement sought to preserve the class system and uphold it as the foundation of established and progressive culture. This underlying theorem made the contemporary Fascists and Nazis see themselves and their respective political labels as at least partially exclusive to one another.

7. Here's a handy checklist I saved
The 14 Defining Characteristics Of Fascism
By Dr. Lawrence Britt
Free Inquiry Magazine / Spring 2003
Dr. Lawrence Britt, a political scientist, studied the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia), and Pinochet (Chile). He found the regimes all had 14 things in common, and he calls these the identifying characteristics of fascism. The article is titled 'Fascism Anyone?', and appears in Free Inquiry's Spring 2003 issue on page 20.

1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism - (CHECK)
Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.
2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights - (CHECK)
Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.
3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause - (CHECK)
The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial, ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.
4. Supremacy of the Military - (CHECK)
Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.
5. Rampant Sexism - (CHECK)
The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Divorce, abortion and homo-sexuality are suppressed and the state is represented as the ultimate guardian of the family institution.
6. Controlled Mass Media - (Whooooboy BIG CHECK)
Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.
7. Obsession with National Security - (HUGE CHECK)
Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.
8. Religion and Government are Intertwined - (HUGE CHECK)
Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.
9. Corporate Power is Protected - (VERY HUGE CHECK)
The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.
10. Labor Power is Suppressed - (HUMONGOUS CHECK)
Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed.
11. Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts - (CHECK)
Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts and letters is openly attacked.
12. Obsession with Crime and Punishment - (HUGE CHECK)
Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.
13. Rampant Cronyism and Corruption - (OY VEY MASSIVE CHECK)
Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.
14. Fraudulent Elections - (Another MASSIVE CHECK)
Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

I'm going to have to bookmark this thread just to keep my hands on that checklist. They just started at number 14 and worked their way backwards it looks like. Well, atleast they're detail oriented in their fascism, right?

20. Disagree on #5. "Homosexuality is suppressed"
I think not. If it was, queer eye for the staright guys would be in the Re-Education Camps, not prime time TV.

However, this new form of totalitarianism, which Comrade Putin calls "Managed Democracy", and as is it the Bush* Playbook for squeezing liberty to death so is ours, will differ just a bit from previous forms.

Therefore, missing this particular rule doesn;t eman a lot. If 2 or 3 or 4were wrong, then we'd wonder if the hypothesis itself is faulty.

But I don't think this crushes your point.

The new American Heritage Foundation dictionary will set you straight. The definition is 'something liberal and communist-like' in that one.
