1. Trumad - IF someone saw Berger taking documents at the national archive
WHY was he not confronted at the time???

If an employee of the national arcvhives saw ANYONE taling documents or putting them in their pockets (even notes) they would be obligated to report and confront.

WHY did this not happen?

7. They did
This investigation has been going on since October. Read Lanny Breuer's interview with Wolf Blitzer. Josh Marshall has it linked: http:talkingpointsmemo.com

Breuer said he Justice Dept. investigators have been happy with Berger's cooperation and promised numerous times that there would be no leaks. I think Ashcroft is behind this in a big way.

11. explanation of why he was not confronted at the time
some reporter last night said she asked the people from archives why Berger was not confronted at the time and was told the clerk who saw the misconduct did not want to confront him personally because he was such a big wig (my words) so she reported it to the police instead.

13. they saw him making notes, not taking documents
and i will bet you anything and hasnt been said, many many take notes and though the rules say, it is a rule not inforced, it is just not being said at all. the said document was large, and berger put to side to read later, (which i do with larger writings i want to spend time with) forgot it over there and just put with his papers and into his portfolio.

didnt know he had it. the people didnt know he had it

missed document and went to berger in oct,.....he went searching his house, found it amongst the same business papers and gave it to them. and he gave his notes without being asked. the two documents.

i figure the putting papers in coat and pants pocket where the notes he has written in front of all the archives people well aware what he was doing and not a single issue

this is a non story

except the ugliness and crassness of bush admin and the power over media and the media being lapdogs to bushco

2. I Dunno, But I Will Say This:
If it came out 2 weeks or so before the election, it's possible it would have been VERY damaging. As it stands now, it won't be an issue. It's going to get wiped out of the news as soon as the 9/11 report is released and the Dem convention starts.

All in all, the timing couldn't have been better for Kerry.

The story is almost over already...

9. I was thinking that, too
This was going to be leaked sometime, and it would've been much worse to have it come out weeks before the election.

5. Did BERGER know he was "under investigation"?
Edited on Wed Jul-21-04 10:07 AM by SoCalDem
If he DID, and he took a position with Kerry, as advisor...they BOTH were Pollyannas..

The repubes are relentless at this kind of stuff, and anyone who has ANYTHING "odd" in their lives, will the TRASHED within an inch of their lives..

If Berger knew of this, and did not tell Kerry, he's got some explaining to do.. If neither of them knew, I wonder how fully "vetted" the other advisors are :scared:..

I hope someone has the fine-toothed comb out today, and is checking everyone else's backgrounds..

These kinds of stories obfuscate the REAL issues, and are out there solely to embarrass and change the subject..

You watch.. the reporters will now ask Kerry in ever way possible...about Berger...and not what's important..

8. Yes, Berger knew
This is about a year old. Hsi lawyer said prosecutors promised repeatedly that there would be no leaks. However, I still think it would've been better if Berger had kpet his distance from Kerry, just to be safe.

12. If a PROSECUTOR has to "promise" no leaks,
the target of the investigation is radioactive.. He should have NEVER "joined up" with Kerry.. There surely was someone else who could have been the advisor.. Shame on Sandy..

Even if there is nothing to this, we all know how it works.. an accusation, spun wildly in the press, BECOMES a reality..

15. they were assured and re assured by justice
would not be leaked. that it wasnt a big deal. and that it sat dormant for almost a year and berger was not a suspect of any kind and it was being dealt with

cause something happens doesnt mean life ends and berger is good and valuable to kerry. no reason to not hire him.

this is silliness in that it is perpetuating the spin bushco create with this, more need to see it as a nothing deal, so quit making it it something

to say berger shouldnt have taken a job with kerry makes it something, .........

16. and who runs justice??
Edited on Wed Jul-21-04 11:10 AM by SoCalDem
I am sure that they will weather this , but when a guy like asscrap is in charge of justice, it's naive to accept any promises.. Ole John probably burned a path into the grass , on his way to tell * about the juicy information, on the day it came to his attention (which was probably day ONE).. The WH probably has a whole pile of these little "bomblets", and they will drop them one by one as time gets tighter :(

10. OK... But who got the story first?
I know that the White House called CNN about it but that was after the piece got out... I'm curious who put this out first and what sources this was attributed too?
