Cynthia McKinney Congratulations Thread
The comeback is on for Cynthia McKinney, one of the most progressive and courageous members in the history of the House. Who else has had the guts to speak as openly on issues like the MLK assassination, COINTELPRO, covert operations in Africa, or the occupation of Palestine? She stood up on the House floor to demand truth about 9/11 in March 2002, when no one else dared, putting her until-then safe seat at risk. As a result, big Republican money flooded into her district and she lost the 2002 primary. But now she has fought her way back, and yesterday clinched a majority in the Democratic primary and near-certain victory in the general. We need more fighters like McKinney!

Put your congratulations here.

3. i remember being horrified
...by her now-legendary comments re: * having foreknowledge of 9-11.

I thought--then--that she was a kook. Boy how things change when you get good information.

Now that I'm awake, I'm anxiously awaiting her return to Congress. Congratulations for fighting the good fight, Cynthia. Your bravery and courage cannot be overstated.

I know you can help lead us out of this mess.

11. Those accusations are false....McKinney knows WHICH party in
Israel is in power. Do you? Try the extreme right wing! Does she fight the connection between Israel's right wing, and America's right wing? You bet!

The many Jews in Israel who do NOT support Sharon and the LIKUD party ALSO want the best for the people of Israel. They (liberal/progressive Jews) just have a more balanced and peace-loving way of going about the process. Just like liberal/progressive AMERICANS want to fight the "war on terror", but we have a more mature way of wanting to go about it than bombing half the countries in the Mideast into oblivion (re: the neocon way).

You said: "She wanted to take $10 million from a Saudi prince...".

Yeah, right. Post a link. Better yet...post a link from a CREDIBLE source....a source McKinney endorses, about her exact and complete ties to that quote you made.

The progressives in Israel, and McKinney, aren't "pro-Palestinian", as much as they are reasonable, sober and mature about the way to handle the very volatile situation in Israel/Palestine.

Your problem is you're pro Sharon. You're pro Palestine destruction. So....which side are you on in the U.S.??? Sharon is the neocon's fave.

McKinney is mine.

20. Okay, so what's wrong with the letter?
So what are the facts of this case?

After Sept. 11 Prince Alwaleed offered $10 million to relief for New York, without conditions. Giuliani rejected it because of Alwaleed's (accurate) statements that U.S. support for Israeli policy had angered the Arab world. Call it opportunistic, but McKinney jumped in with a letter urging Alwaleed to give the $10 million to worthy causes in the black community. She certainly didn't ask for money for herself, as you implied in your deleted post (which I wouldn't have deleted, as disingenuous as it was).

And?

23. And it was Guliani who was grandstanding
Guiliani was grandstanding on this one. He made a link appear between the check and the Prince's observation or thought when there was none.

McKinney was slapping at his giuliani and the repulican hypocricy.

And what's the link to the baseless claims that she is anti israel?

the letter or the prince aren't connected to israel. The prince owns a huge chunck of citi bank and other u.s. corporations yet talk radio describes it as if he's one of the terrorists.

24. A great win, her voice shall help.
Congrats to Cynthia McKinney, it was a slight win for people getting involved in a campaign and overcoming big money and right wing interests.

Many volunteers, plus visits from Maxine Waters (2x) Barbara Lee, Mary Kapur, Danny Glover, Bill Owens and others rallied the troops.

Heck even watching Fahrenheit 9/11 rallied the volunteers as they saw why we were trying to get her elected!

Tuesday night, McKinney called her primary victory "one of the greatest political comebacks in history."

"We've got to make America, America," McKinney told supporters. "We've got to avoid any backsliding on civil rights or human rights. We've got to get our troops out of harm's way. We've got to turn around this Bush economy."

Two votes from my household. Would have been four if my Marine son, now in Fallujah, had been home to vote. He's voted for Cynthia before. And if my 20-yr. old daughter hadn't been out of town. Oh, well, we'll give her 4 votes in November.

27. Cynthia is my hero - here's one of her speeches from the floor
Edited on Wed Jul-21-04 02:58 PM by Cronus
I present her famous speech on my web page:

http://cronus.com/zone

Ms. McKINNEY. "Mr. Speaker, I am worried about what is happening to our great country today. I fear that many of us cannot see what is happening here. Maybe we are too close. Maybe there are even people who do not want us to see; but our friends and allies in Europe and elsewhere are reporting that they are seeing disturbing developments in our country, like the fading of our fundamental constitutional rights, the creation of a war machine that threatens world peace, the spending of a generation of Americans on this war on terrorism, and even an attack on truth in government by forming the Office of Strategic Influence to lie to us and to the rest of the world. The President even asked Hollywood to make these developments palatable to the American people.
With this as a backdrop, I would just like to ask that Members close their eyes and imagine being drawn deeper and deeper into black space. If Members keep their eyes closed and if they close them good and tight, they will be able to imagine themselves going faster and faster and deeper and deeper into a black unknown.
All of a sudden we see a bright light at a distance far away, but faster and faster and closer and closer it becomes brighter and brighter; and in one instant, with one grand motion, we can cross from the darkness into the light. But just before we make the crossing, a huge booming voice coming from nowhere, and at the same time coming from everywhere, booms all around us: You unlock this door with the key of understanding. Beyond it is another dimension, a dimension of hearing that which is not spoken, a dimension of seeing that which is invisible, a dimension of reading that which is not written.
We are moving into a land of both shadow and substance, of things and ideas. Welcome. We just crossed over into the Twilight Zone, otherwise known as George Bush's America. For it is here and only here that the White House could receive warning after warning of massive attacks that were going to take place on American soil, the attack happens, and both the President and the Vice President, in separate phone calls to TOM DASCHLE, ask that Congress not investigate what happened and why. That could only happen in the Twilight Zone.
