WASHINGTON (AP) - Democrats are raising questions about Justice Department contacts with White House lawyers months ago about a criminal investigation of former Clinton administration national security adviser Sandy Berger.
The White House acknowledgment came Wednesday as the chairman of the Democratic National Committee requested any correspondence between the Justice Department and the White House regarding the probe.
On Capitol Hill, the main investigative committee in the Republican-led House will look into the allegations against Berger.
DNC chairman Terry McAuliffe said he wants to see any paper trail between the Justice Department and the White House because of "the questionable timing" of leaked news revealing the Berger probe just days before release of the report by the commission investigating the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks. The panel's final report details failures during both the Bush and Clinton administrations in responding to terrorist threats before Sept. 11.
