Anyone know how to retrieve old links/articles?
Edited on Thu Jul-22-04 09:21 PM by vi5
I have a pretty large word document with a lot of links to articles detailing all the bush crapola, that I've been keeping since before the war began. I have one that is as follows:

Bush Ignoring CIA’s Caution on Iraq
www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A20194-2004Feb6.html

But when I cut and paste the link it gives me a "page not found" error.

Damnit. I knew there were articles that I read back then which were the exact opposite of the way it is being spun, which is that the CIA was being cautious, but Bush was applying the pressure.

Anyone know how I could find/retrieve this article?

On edit: A google search bought up this separate but just as interesting link:

1. Enter the link into the search box at ...

The Internet Archive.
http://www.archive.org

If that doesn't work, try seraching the Washington Post site for the title of the article. If that doesn't work, search Google for the title of the article - I found a lot of old articles that way because Google has it's own archive, so if the main link doesn't work, try the "cache" link. Good luck! :-)

ON EDIT
Another trick that usually works ...
Type the article's URL into the Google search box. You'll probably get a message saying "Sorry, no information is available for the URL" - but below that, there's a link to pages that contain the term (URL) you're searching for. Click the "contain the term" link and usually, you'll be able to find a page that reprinted the full text of the article. :-)

3. archive.org
a really cool site that takes web snapshots of websites every so often. Sites can block the archiving so it's hit and miss. And i haven't tried a newspaper site using this tool.

But it's rescued me several times when i lost something.

4. I can usually find a mirror copy by pasting the first sentence, in quotes
into Google and searching that.

All my Washington Post links are dead, too, at least the ones from a few years ago.
