25. Do you really care about this issue? |
|
If you did, I would have thought you were familiar with the fact that during the Clinton admin, millions of blacks benefitted from higher employment rates, lower rates of drug abuse and teen pregnancy, higher incomes, higher rates of home ownership by minorities, and increased access to health insurance amongst others.
If that's "taking minorities for granted", I wish the DNC would take me for granted. I could use a higher income also. A new home wouldn't hurt either.

don't take Blacks for slaves and windowdressing. Black people are ahead of the curve on this type of rhetoric ! His love of taking things for granted was proudly displayed by his no show at the NAACP invitation. Most of my friends are African American and they know about this BS. They know who a Dixicrat and a Republican is. They have been fighting this fight for years. We have been lax in a lot of ways but I sure don't take my black friends or their votes for granted.

it might be interesting to see whether black voters think it is a myth. It was rather an issue in my tradtionally Democratic voting community two years ago when a number of popular and influential black ministers told their fellow congregations pretty much the same thing. Whether it translated into extra votes for the Republicans I don't recall; the black vote was way down, anyway, and had been down two years earlier even when a generally black candidate had been running for US Rep.
Myth? I don't think so. Rather, one of those uncomfortable truths that feels so much better to ignore.

to avoid. Simply saying that the Democrats have been taking black voters for granted is not to say that Republicans are offering them anything better. Of course the Republicans aren't offering them anything better. I have difficulty understanding how anyone black, or more broadly, poor, could vote Republican.

34. perception is reality |
|
For whatever reason, if there is a general perception among blacks that Democrats are taking them for granted, it would probably be a good idea for the Democrats to deal with that perception. It's easy to quantify all sorts of rises and falls in this rate or the other, but it's also useful to see how things are qualified.
Blacks aren't going to jump ship and vote Republican any time soon, but if they feel like they aren't being listened to/attended to, they are simply not going to vote.

40. as I suggested earlier, |

it might be interesting to see whether black voters think it's a myth. Even though blacks as a group vote overwhelmingly for Democrats, and rightfully so, given their choices, that doesn't mean they are satisfied with their representation. In fact, given the abysmally low percentage of blacks that vote at all, one could make a safe assumption that black voters, particularly the young, feel pretty well disillusioned with politics in general.
As for the statement that blacks feel that Democrats take their vote for granted, I'll stand by it. In fact your resistance to even entertain the possibility that black voters may not be 100 percent satisfied with the Democrats is indicative that the issue is exactly as I characterized it: "one of those uncomfortable truths that feels so much better to ignore."
There are two issues here: 1) Blacks have a preception that Democrats take their votes for granted. 2) Mainstream Democrats do not wish to give credence to this perception.

24. This is true--we count on the vote of the African American |

community to be overwhelmingly Democratic--and to turn out in high numbers. To deserve this loyalty from the voters, this party needs to do more to earn these votes.
A good start would be to make it easier for African Americans to start businesses (get loans etc), invest more money in the inner cities, and provide more racially based scholarship $$$ for college.
(I would also ban the use of standardized tests in education--this is a racist policy pure and simple.)

27. You've got it backwards |
|
The AA vote is overwhelmingly Dem because the Dems are overwhelmingly better than the Repukes on their issues, which clearly refutes the idea that the Dems have taken blacks for granted. To assume otherwise is to assume that blacks are not smart enough to realize that they are helping the Dems while getting nothing in return. Black people are NOT stupid and there is a reason for why they vote the way they do.
During the Clinton admin, millions of blacks benefitted from higher employment rates, lower rates of drug abuse and teen pregnancy, higher incomes, higher rates of home ownership by minorities, and increased access to health insurance amongst others.

I'm not sure that's a good thing in an African American audience.
African American audiences tend to be very demonstrative when they approve of the message delivered.
