Jewish tradition said they had conquered the land of Canaan, and expelled its people. So their myth is then written to give them a justification for lording it over the previous inhabitants.

European Christians then felt they needed a justification for enslaving so many Africans. So they found the appropriate passage of the Bible, and said "these people we're using as slaves - they must be the ones talked about in the Bible. So therefore we are justified in enslaving them - it's God's judgment".
