seeking enlightenment....
This will upset some people and please pardon my lack of historical knowledge but after coming across this I have to wonder why we are so supportive of this nation. (see link)

Just looking to be enlightened, that's all.

2. Okay I did it
and I don't feel any smarter. I think I did see the form of Steve Guttenberg staring up at me for a split second.

4. That's a normal response.
Now, just keep doing that until he says something. Steve Guttenberg is always so funny!

3. I'll give it to you in a nutshell.....
The US essentially supports Israel and its powerbase in the Middle East.

Using Western technology they have developed a formidable nuclear deterent....AND possible offensive nuclear capability via diesel powered subs with nuke warheads.

All this presents a completely appaling situation for those in the Middle East that see Israel as a lose cannon and someone who "just won't go away".

This is the reason those in the area developed WMD and/or began getting nukes....so they could have the same potential capability.

Enter the US....Many have tried to solve the problem in terms of the age old Palestinian problem....but the Middle Ease AREA problem is really about Israel having too much power and being backed by the US.

The solution to peace in the Middle East would be to annouce to the world that we are taking and/or controlling Israel's nuke force. But we can't get the stomach to do anything about their nukes....and with the Bush Admin....they are stupid enough to think that others in the region will simply BACK DOWN UNDER US PRESSURE....and then Israel will be the ONLY one in the area with nukes...therefore peace will be maintained.

It don't work that way.

Well Libya may have buckled under to some extent...but IRAN will NOT.
They probably have a nuke capability right now...and they aren't going to give it up because they don't want to become the next Iraq.

So for all intents and purposes....our backing Israel and entering into the region to attempt influencing the area will have no effect on the very dangerous Cold War that will ensue....
