Bush's Gross Racist Quote to Urban League
http://www.whitehouse.gov/news/releases/2004/07/20040723-8.html

Do you remember a guy named Charlie Gaines? Somebody gave me a quote he said, which I think kind of describes the environment we're in today. I think he's a friend of Jesse's. He said, "Blacks are gagging on the donkey but not yet ready to swallow the elephant."

10. I thought it was a bad rendition...
...of "Straining at a gnat, but swallowing a horse." Or something along those lines.

Not racist, just really really strange.

Later,

and statement--with sexual implications (perhaps homophobic).

13. What a dirt bag. It's the oldest trick in the book...
...to attribute a quote to someone else so that you get the advantage of it without any of the fallout it might cause. Bush is saying, Hey, I'm just the messenger, here, so don't shoot ME, okay, folks?

And our boy in the White House takes it even one step further by associating this Charlie Gaines with Jesse Jackson, a man the right wing loves to hate. So, while it may be an odious, if true, quote, his audience (which, no matter who he's actually speaking to, is always the fundie bigots) has been informed of the less than "white, right, and outta sight" source from whence it came.

I repeat: what a dirt bag.

15. Wouldn't it be funny if
just like that famous Tennessee/Texas quote (won't get fooled again), the actual quote was along the lines of "blacks are lagging behind the donkey but not quite ready to follow the elephant".

33. it's his version of "slumming"
He thinks he's being cute and adorable for "coming down to the level" of those from a less-privileged social/economic background. In his smug ignorance, he just assumes that poor rural people are crude and stupid. I don't think he realizes (or wants to know) that the so-called "common" folk can be MORE polite and better-spoken than the caricature he's presenting.

I think it would totally freak him out to see "ghetto" or "hillbilly" types speaking grammatically-correct standard English, being well-mannered, and discussing current events, science or the arts without using obscenities. (They can and do.)

For an interesting historical example, see Robert Hughes's "The Fatal Shore" -- he discusses an Australian prison warden who loved showing power over his prisoners by emulating them, while constantly reminding them that there was no way they could ever be a member of the social elite, like him!

17. Gagging on the donkey?
I suspect that Bush's comment about blacks "gagging on the donkey" was definitely some kind of underhanded insult. We should cruise Freep and other racist hives and see how Bush's comment is being received. I bet they totally understood and appreciated Bush's coded lingo. Let's not forget... Bush speaks in code to Christian fundamentalists all the time.

(may want to watch it if you're opening in public or at work)

"... Hot hot hot. Finally saw Gus' "Elephant" Geniustrata if i do say so myself.

20. It's pretty damn suggestive...
and the entire speech is condescending and rude. He didn't dignify Revs. Sharpton and Jackson with the title "reverend", then he went on to parrrot the old GOP line that blacks vote democrat because they are too stupid to know that the GOP's pro-oligarchy policies would be better for them, that they are too stupid to know what is in their best interest.

If anybody's being fooled and taken for granted, it's working class and suburban Christian whites, who actually believe that Bush is a Christian just because he claims he is, even when his policies literally shit on every page of Christ's teachings in the Bible.

of course he would probably condescend to anyone, but the contempt he displayed with this particular audience (coincidentally mostly black :eyes: ) is indeed indicative of his and his party's RACIST values.

32. They seem to be using a lot of weird sexually suggestive language
This reminds me of all the "sloppy seconds" talk regarding Kerry's choice of Edwards for VP. I just can't imagine someone using this line in a speech, unless it was a not so subtle insult.
