At that time he was mid-way through his second term as governor of Texas, a position he assumed in 1994 after defeating incumbent Democrat Ann Richards. Prior to running for governor he spent several years in the oil business and served as the managing general partner of the Texas Rangers baseball team. He ran an unsuccessful campaign for Congress in 1978.

P R E S I D E N T I A L C A N D I D A T E John Kerry (D) U.S. Senator (Massachusetts) John Kerry is a decorated Vietnam War veteran who returned from the conflict to become one of the most outspoken opponents of the war. He entered politics in 1982, when he was elected lieutenant governor of Massachusetts. Two years later he ran for U.S. Senate on a campaign that refused contributions from political action committees. He was reelected in 1990, 1996 (in a tough race against Republican Gov. William Weld) and 2002.
