Since the thugs have made Liberal a dirty word....let's turn it around and
keep repeating the fact that we are liberal and proud...and if liberal means you want good schools, good affordable health care..etc...it's about time we shift that connotation of the word liberal from weak and stupid, to one that means what's best for all the people.

I am Liberal and proud of it! It's a good thing!

8. Another thing.
Liberal means we support clean air and water. We are against global warming too. We believe in this so that our children can grow up in an toxin free world. Shuts them up every time.

23. Me being a liberal is good for their children
Edited on Sun Jul-25-04 04:13 PM by SemperEadem
because I'm not the one looking to allow corporations to dump waste in the water or in the air to poison their children, circumventing pollution regulations in order to worship a bottom line or a quarterly stock performance dividend just so I can afford another house at the beach which I don't need.

When their children develop some kind of incurable rare cancer because of exposure to toxins and chemicals, I'll be the one on their side to make the companies address their negligence, not holding up a picket sign saying they needed to be better parents.

I am also flying a flag too. Its time to redefine the issue. I am through with struggling to argue my way past the negative connotations. This is an issue where constructive dialogue is futile. Its a war of 2 Americas and I want decent schools, a safe environment, a sane foreign policy, living wages and a representative govt.
It kind of reminds me of how the "sans coulottes" adopted that label as a class identity in their revolution - but it had to come from aristocrats first.

I am very clear on where I stand and am proud of my liberal values.

12. Liberal means self-governing. It means idealism,
Edited on Sun Jul-25-04 11:51 AM by higher class
generosity, sharing, honesty, opportunity - paying taxes to make it all work AS A NATION. At least that is what we and the teachers and ministers and scout leaders are still teaching our children.

We provide opportunity to people. We allow people to attain. We allow people to acquire the basics of life and more.

This is what I was taught and I believed it and now someone is laughing in my face.

So do we still try to make it work? Or do we become honest with our kids and tell them their future is ugly - ruthlessly dishonest and selfish, for a few.

Now we have reverends telling their parishoners that the our youth and the children of another country deserve to be killed for our corporations in partnerships with certain leaders and their military and bankers and certain foreign leaders. And that we should shut up out of patriotism, bow our heads and don't look at the job opportunities being lost and don't look at the poisons and ruination of our wildernesses and resources, plus our air and water. Don't look. Trust us. We'll take care of you. We know best. Give us your retirement and medical money and we'll take care of it and you. Just smoke a few more cigarettes and try the latest drug on the street because we put it there for you, then eat our biologically modified food, because we know more than the creator. Yeah, JUST SAY YES. That's what we should teach our children so that there won't be any hypocrisy.

Liberal in today's world is going backward to an idealism that filled a young child's heart and soul, then trying to include those who have been excluded.

18. I do it all the time
as well as haranguing "progressives" for being timid. I'll let the "populists" off the hook, since the meaning's rather distinct.

Don't ya just love it when Junior's out parroting praise for his plans in Iraq to "promote the establishment of liberal democracies" around the world? He must gag on this, and since his little pachinko machine of a brain is utterly incapable of holding contradictions or nuance without making him choke on his chewing gum, it's so much fun to watch. At one event, I could even see him in full performance confusion as he tried to keep the happy face and cheeryspeak going as he was praising a phrase that utilized "liberal" in a nice way. Such fun.

me which word stands for... tolerant of others views, progressive, open-minded, generous, free-thinking. That's why most of us here are LIBERAL!!

Look up the word conservative...set in ones way, conformist, unadventurous, intolerant of others ideas, old-fashion.

if anyone calls me liberal, I smile, thank them and, depending on how well I know them, I hug them.

You guessed it. No one "accuses" me of being liberal anymore. Darn it.

I say it loud and proud.
