Obama shines brightly on national stage
CBS' Schieffer: 'This guy is a rock star'

By David Mendell
Tribune staff reporter
Published July 25, 2004, 2:11 PM CDT

BOSTON -- U.S. Senate candidate Barack Obama's ascending political star appeared to rise another 1,000 feet Sunday after the Illinois state senator stepped into the often blinding headlights of the Sunday morning talk circuit--and didn't get run over.

Besides the host of obligatory Illinois media interviews, Obama made the rounds of high-profile Sunday morning news shows that often can make or break a political candidate's career. If the early reviews were any indication, Obama's fast-moving career continues ahead at near blinding speed.

Obama, the keynote speaker at the Democratic National Convention here Tuesday night, appeared on NBC's Meet the Press with Tim Russert, CBS' Face the Nation with Bob Schieffer and Late Edition with Wolf Blitzer. Russert, in particular, put Obama to the test, asking a series of hardball questions designed to throw the intellectually nimble Obama off his game.

"This was sort of his 'welcome to the NBA' moment," said Obama's lead media consultant, David Axelrod, of the Meet the Press appearance. "I'm biased, but I thought he was unflappable."

1. I guess only negative threads attract interest
One self aggrandized kick. I think this article nails it, this was Obama's first shot on the national stage, a HUGE step in his career. He needed to come across as a reasonable and intelligent lawmaker, not a reactionary nut case. His responses were measured and reasonbly sounding to the majority of Americans, just not to some here on DU.

4. I watched him on MTP I was impressed and he has
and achieved a lot. Let us remember that this man is running for public office, not pres of kindergarten. If anyone here thinks they can do better and WIN - go fer it!!!!

I tried to post this in another thread and it was locked. I am so f'n sick of "back seat" candidates. Most of them are young - immature and idealistic. There is nothing wrong with the "idealistic" part of it, but please......don't be so friggin critical of someone fighting the fight and obviously winning.

Numerous threads started because he wasn't sufficiently reactionary against the bunnypants admin in his debut on the national sunday morning gab fests when they set a RW trap for him, IMHO.

13. He was on MTP today
and here is what he said.

"What I think is that it was an ideologically driven war. I think that George Bush was sincere and is sincere about his desire to maintain a strong America, but I think there was a single-mindedness to this process that has led our country into a very difficult position. It's a consequence of that single-mindedness that we did not create the kind of international framework that would have allowed success once we decided to go in."

Transcript link http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/5488345 /

He said Bush was sincere....OMG! People started foaming at the mouth. They said he was another Zell Miller and is a piece of shit. They all wrote him to tell him so....too. :eyes:
