Remember the Bush I-Dan Rather dustup in Feb 1988.

They argued live on the CBS Evening News.

Bush I's poll numbers skyrocketed.

Rather gave Bush the nomination with that.

2. I think 95 percent of the nation wants to tell the press to shove it.

3. I don't think so.
I think the difference is the tone. Bush 1 didn't say "shove it" or anything like it. He just calmly countered Rather's questioning by sort of turning the table. This is more like the recent Cheney "F-off" remark.

This thing by Teresa looked bad because it seemed a little nasty. And more importantly because the guy was right; she did say 'un-american'. All he did is ask what she meant by that. I have to admit, I'd sort like to know too.

5. The guy was wrong- he asked about her saying 'UnAmerican activities'
and she objected to him using the term 'UnAmerican activities' (because that phrase is a McCarthy witchhunt reference) If you watch the full coverage of the entire incident she never said 'UnAmerican activities' but that is the terminology he used in asking her questions. He used that term incorrectly in an attempt to trap her and that is why she was making sure to straighten him out.

6. Oh, I see.

Yeah, that is really a low blow, and you'd have to figure done on purpose as well - because she clearly said un-american 'traits'. That guy really did deserve it. 'Shove it' was definately the right thing to say.

Thanks for clearing that up.

edit: Having thought about it a while though, I think you really do have to be careful when you call people 'un-american', because of the ugly history surrounding that term, like you said. I'll bet she stops referring to people in that way from now on.
