I've been too busy, to be honest with you (I know it's no excuse, but I have a new daughter!!!)
I'm willing to go back and re-read what's been said, though
I'll tell you what, the best Democrats around (in my opinion) are here at the DU

Looks like you can catch some clips of the speeches on the official convention site, and probably CSPAN will have some. Jimmy Carter was absolutely wonderful.. he is one to watch, for sure. He is a man that loves this country dearly, and it showed. I highly recommend his speech, if you can see it.
Thanks for thinking we're nice.. I think we are too. And you're nice.. that's why you can see our niceness.. does that make sense?? :grouphug:

Thanks, repub! And for the record, I know many republicans who are nice people and thoroughly disgusted with Bush. Some may be voting Dem for the first time in their lives this year.

10. How about the religious right? |

Don't forget those religious fanatics who would force mandatory school prayer, eliminate all abortions, and end all business transactions on Sunday.

12. They're just one of several antisocial groups being pandered to. |
|
Edited on Mon Jul-26-04 10:47 PM by TahitiNut
They're "useful idiots." They don't run anything. There's a basic difference between the groups of people who've bitten on some cheap bait on a rusty hook - and those sitting in their yachts running the show. As long as the Greedy Obscene Perverts keep scaring the sheep, the sheep will never band together and trample them.
When an authoritarian regime is ceded the power to prohibit abortion, they gain the power to impose abortions. It's a package deal.
When an authoritarian regime is ceded the power to selectively endorse religion, they gain the power to define religion. It's a package deal.
With every "wedge issue" BOTH 'sides' get squeezed.
Divide and conquer is a very old strategy.

16. Blind partisanship is a socially transmitted disease , imho. |
|
If there's anything that's destroyed rational public political discourse in this nation, it's (rabid) partisanship.

What's destroyed rational public political discourse is the Shaife funded elves who work behind the scenes to destroy Democrats. I'm waiting for Republicans to unite and tell these un-American assholes to go kill themselves. But you know what? They ain't gonna do that..BECAUSE!!!! The Republican party has been taken over by a faction that clearly wants to deny the rights afforded by every American.
And let me tell you about Partisanship! What side of their coin is right? Abortion, taxes, the war, the environment..... anything? Fuck the Republicans and the tank they ride in on!

17. I grew up in a Repub household |
|
These people are my family and friends. They are not haters, fascists, or otherwise evil. They are real people who love their country as much as I do, but with different ideas on how to get to the same place. As much as I disagree with Republicans on many issues, in the end we all want the same things.
Bush, Rove, Cheney, and particularly PNAC and Grover Norquist, have hijacked your party. The Repubs I grew up with were non-interventionist, fiscally conservative, and believed in personal liberty and responsibility. How the G.O.P. strayed so far from those ideals amazes me. My parents, lifelong Repubs, would never have accepted these freaks.

25. "We all want the same things." |
|
Is that really true?
I don't want more deregulation; Repubs do. I don't want illegal abortions; Repubs do. I don't want nutjobs like Scalia on the Supreme Ct.; Repubs do. I don't want corporate welfare; Repubs do. I don't want tax cuts for the mega wealthy; Repubs do. I could go on and on.

26. I was being overly broad, I guess |
|
What you say is true. The point I am trying to make, and that I didn't properly articulate, is that people want the same basic things, such as good health, security, and a happy home. I guess I chould have been more specific.
How we get there is the all-important question, as you sort of point out. Too many Republicans think life is a zero-sum game and the only way to get what they want is to take it from somebody else. I could go on and on, too, but I won't.

22. Dad was a "Rockefeller Republican" |
|
Back when the Republican Party had a "Liberal" wing.
They actually used to have a somewhat liberal Social Agenda in that wing. Then they came up with the saying:
"Republicans don't tolerate their liberals; they CONVERT them."
Who knew it would be by force?

was Sen. Ed Brooke's Administrative Assistant.
The minute I was old enough to vote, I was a McGovern Dem.
Now I'm a Liberal, Union Democrat.
Today's Rebubs would never except Senators like Chuck Percy, Ed Brooke, Jacob Javitz, or even Everett Dierkson.
Nixon would have been to Liberal to these guys.
