Federal Funding of Stem Cell Research

I am all for stem cell research, but I am not so sure that federal funds should go to funding the research. I am not against federal funding of stem cell research because of the debate on whether it is moral, or due to a believe that people's tax dollars should not be used for things that they do not agree with. People's tax dollars are used to support things they do not agree with eveyday. I believe the federal funds that would go to stem cell reseach would be better used on other social programs. Since there are private organization that would like to fund stem cell research I somewhat think that spending federal money on the research is a bit of a waste of government money. I do believe that govermment at times should provide money for researching new discoveries. For instance, I support government funding of effort to increase fuel efficiency of cars. I support this because I believe we should do everything we can to clean up and preserve the environment. I also believe that many in the car industry will not spend the money to build more fuel efficient cars. I guess I would support federal funding of stem cell research if no other private organization would fund it. In additon, I probably would not support government funding of fuel efficient cars if there were private agencies that were willing to do it. In conclusion, I support government funding for research that would not get private funding. I however do not support government funding of research that can get private funding. Why do people support government funding for research?
