1. You don't think that maybe that was a small component of having him speak?

4. Yes but he made it sound like it was his sole purpose of being there.
I beg to differ.

15. umm...'cause it was the sole purpose
What, Ron Reagan is the only person in America whose parent died from Alzheimer's? How about the only famous person?

Not by a long shot.

BUT, he is the only one with the same name as a republican icon who's willing to speak at a Democratic convention.

hmmm...

17. Ron Reagan
has indicated that he most likely speak re. stem cell research at the Repub convention if asked. He is not shy about speaking his mind regarding the truth of anything. Example, in the past he has acknowleged his father's mistakes. I can hope that Nancy will speak out against the actions of the present administration.

2. It accomplished many things.
1. It made the point that the Democrats are committed to stem-cell research and won't let fundamentalist theology get in the way.

2. It was a powerful statement towards moderates that the son of a beloved Republican president would be speaking in favor of the Democratic party.

3. It pisses off the Reagan worshippers (but I consider that an added bonus).

The message was the important part. Now, Zell Miller on the other hand... that's being done simply to rile us up. Too bad we couldn't care less about him.

6. Exactly!
What got me going was that Koppel implied that pissing off Repugs was his sole purpose of being there... which is silly.

BTW, excellent points. :-)

18. Sick and tired of the pundits
who sit on their collective asses, as I do, expounding away as if they know more than I do about the political scene.

5. no, it WAS to talk about stem cell, but the messenger was important also
because it gets across to the moderates and swing voters that support for stem cell research is widespread and even a REAGAN supports it. and that it's those opposed to it who are the extremists.

7. Ron said he refused to do a campaign speech
He said to the DNC organizers that if they were expecting a campaign speech out of him, they were barking up the wrong tree. He was there to talk about stem cell research.

Plus, I know that he leans left and despises Bush, so I don't think he has a problem jabbing him a bit.

13. Yes, but
towards the end, he came darn close to saying, "Vote for Kerry!" If you listened hard, it sure sounded like he was endorsing Kerry and Edwards. Was I the only one who heard it?

8. Talking about stem cell research WILL rile up Republicans.
In fact, talking about ANYTHING on the Democratic platform, will rile up Republicans. It's a good bet that NOTHING the Democrats say this week in their convention will please Republicans...and that's a good thing Koppel has his cause and effect confused and needs to stop sensationalizing the mundane.

11. Yup-
I can't help but picturing Mr. Burns sitting in his cavernous office watching the convention on tee vee and commenting to Smithers: "Ugh! Look at how multicultural and fun those people look, Smithers. It makes me feel positively icky."

10. Ron Reagan was there
to honor his father and all others who suffer needlessly because of religious tyranny, IMHO.

14. Ted is just a shophisticated shill for the RW. Move on.
He is as phony as they come. He is not about anything but using the code words and phrases to help the Rethugs.

19. It was a SYMBIOTIC relationship if I ever saw one. He could not have
talked about stem-cell research at the Repug convention (they have Falwell now, after all) and it made the "big tent" approach apparent by the Reagan name.
