I don't know if you saw highlights of Jon Stewart on whatever morning show he was on this morning. He was way over the top when critizing the convention and in particular John Kerry's war record. Obviously, his stupid career is more important than this country. He knows damn well how important it is to get the lunatic out of the white house and the things he said about Kerry's war record were beyond the pale.....I'm so upset right now I can't quote him...can barely remember the things he said they but that were beyond the pale....please somebody help me out here. FUCK HIM,FUCK HIM,FUCK HIM...I'LL NEVER WATCH THE DAILY SHOW AGAIN....SOMETHINGS ARE MORE IMPORTANT THAN GETTING LAUGH JON....REPUGS WILL BE USING HIS WORDS...WATCH.

2. It's satire, and he rips both sides well |
|
Very rarely does he do a premise purely contrived to bash one side or the other--mostly he makes fun of the silliness inherent in both parties. A political comedian who makes fun of one side only is usually terribly dull and uninteresting.

42. And That's Jon's Fault? |
|
The media is talking to him now, he's covering the Democratic convention and it's his JOB to make jokes. That's what he does.
When the Republican convention rolls around, he'll be making jokes about them -- that's what he does. I assure you that they will be far more cutting at that time.
Now, if you want to be mad at the Today Show for not having him back on for the RNC, then be mad at them. But Jon isn't the problem. In fact, he's a big part of the solution -- even if he isn't owned and controlled by the Democratic Party.

|
Or the Today Show's?
Jon can't force the Today Show to have him back. He's here now, at the Democratic Convention, talking about the Demcratic party and TELLING JOKES. He'll do the same thing a month from now to the Republicans, but I'm betting he won't hold back any punches. If the Today Show brings him on, he'll slaughter the Right Wing. If they won't, whose fault is that? His?

I merely pointed out that he reached far more people in his appearance on the Today show than he ever does doing his Comedy Central show, so there were hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people, who saw him who have very little idea who he is, so all they know of him now is that he's that guy ripping Kerry a new one on national television ... that's all

117. Let's Think About This Logically Then |
|
Edited on Wed Jul-28-04 01:47 PM by GiovanniC
Let's think about that subset of people who are
(1) Voters (2) Undecided (3) Watching the Today Show (4) Have never watched The Daily Show
I don't know how big that group is (I'm guessing here - not very). But let's think about them for a minute.
WORST CASE: Jon makes jokes about how Kerry should talk about how he's like all the heroes from Vietnam War movies. They take a major leap and think that means he hates John Kerry and he's telling them not to vote for John Kerry. He's not very influential, since they've never heard of him. AND, he's just one more anti-Kerry voice among many. We lose them, but honestly we probably already lost them if a guy they've never heard of convinces them to vote against Kerry because of those relatively mild jokes.
NEUTRAL CASE: Hearing Jon speak, they think his alleged "anti-Kerry" jokes are funny and decide to tune into The Daily Show to hear more ripping on Kerry. They get exposed to Bush's idiocy and lies on a daily basis from here on out. We have a good shot at winning them.
BEST CASE: They're already voting for Kerry, they listen to Jon and either think it's funny or they don't. They don't change their minds about Kerry and they continue to support him. We win them.
I don't see how Jon was all that damaging, frankly. I don't see why we have to get all upset when a comedian tells jokes. That's like getting mad at an accountant who subtracts. Seriously, folks.

Edited on Wed Jul-28-04 11:48 AM by Straight Shooter
"On a narrow tributary of the Duong Keo River, he and his crew came upon what looked like a deserted village. Then someone thought he saw a man running away. There was no response to a call for surrender, and Kerry took his gun and went to have a look. As he approached, 42 Vietnamese - women, children, and old men - appeared with empty hands raised. They were in desperate shape, hungry and sick, and although Kerry received radio instructions to leave them and get on with the business of killing enemy combatants, he herded the villagers onto boats and took them to the nearest American base to receive food and medical care."
This from The New Yorker, July 26, 2004 edition, page 60, referring to an excerpt from a book by Brinkley.
I find it hard to imagine that Jon Stewart would try to get a laugh from something as commendable as this

One of the reasons that journalism is as shoddy as it is today is that the rightwing has intimidated journalists from doing their jobs properly. They are so afraid to be called the "liberal media" that they bend over backwards, and sometimes absurdly, to prove they aren't.

|

... he loses all the credibility he has gained. As someone posts below, "Stewart's job is satire and not getting Democrats elected".
No one is above satire. But in my experience, his satire and criticism aimed at Bush has been a lot more hard-hitting and damaging than any aimed at Kerry. This is because there is much more to criticize with Bush, and this simple truth balances out his coverage in the end.
Watching Stewart in the long run, one gets the following images of the candidates:
Kerry - "He's not too stimulating on the stump, and may be a bit self-centered, and waffles some". Bush - "He lied us into a war that killed thousands of people, and seemingly lives in some Bizarro World where Iraq is a safe place and there is no terrorism, yet constantly uses fear to placate us".
Many in the media promote that former image, but few (besides Stewart) promote the latter. He would not even be on the air anymore if he didn't do some of the former (remember Bill Maher's "Politically Incorrect"?)

especially when he was so smug about Vietnam. I don't know how old Jon is, but to those of us who remember, his smugness was repugnant.
AlthoughI expect Jon will be much harder on the Repubs than he was on the Dems, the problem is that Jon's attitude plays into the Nader idea that both parties are equally bad.
That idea is simply not true. No way would Gore have gone to war in Iraq the way Bush did. Not to speak of Supreme Court nominees, the economy, social security, the environment, etc.

...stupid. CBS must make him say that so that he can make a joke about Republicans.
However, when Stewart makes a joke about Democrats, I tend to think, that's funny, we deserved.
Few people are totally above being satirized. Stewart's job is satire and not getting Democrats elected. At least his satire is honest, unlike some of the bullshit Letterman (who is clearly voting for Kerry) is forced to say on his show.

i just can't believe that he would have been serious...if he was being comedic..i think we have to let it fly. He's done a TON of good for the democrats. I haven't seen the show but Jon does a lot of "making fun of ourselves" type of comedy which i really respect. I can't believe he would in a serious way attack Kerry about his war record. A transcript probably wouldnt do it justice, b/c sarcasm and other comedic subtleties wouldn't translate well in text only, but i would like to read it. If what you say is true, i'm very dissappointed as well.

34. Jon Is Right About How Many Times They've Mentioned He's a Vietnam Vet |
|
I realize that the fact that he's a veteran gives him some credibility, and they want to bash that into everyone's heads. Most people aren't watching all of the convention coverage and all of the interviews with the Democrats, but for those of us who are watching a lot of it, it gets repetitive. And all of the Dems are talking about his Vietnam service as though no one in America is aware Kerry was in Vietnam.
I don't think that Kerry and his surrogates should stop talking about his 'Nam service but on the same hand a lot of people want to hear more about what his plans for the next four (eight?) years are, and less about what he did 30 years ago.
I believe that's the subtle point Jon is getting at.

I've never seen the Daily Show, but whenever I read people here seeming to think he's some kind of dem hero, I always think it's a big mistake.
I recall an appearance he made on Bill Moyers "NOW", and I remember not being impressed, though I forget the details. I think it was the same kind of thing, a cynical "they're all the same" thing, which is bogus and doesn't do anyone any good.

how many times we've heard the "Kerry is a war hero" meme at the convention.
Couric asked him what he felt Kerry should say in his speech Thursday, and Jon said he should mention he served in Vietnam, then joked about how often it's been mentioned, blowing the Kerry image up to almost the ridiculous, so now Kerry had taken a row boat up the river to the Khmer Rouge, had rescued Forrest Gump while the bombs were dropping, had gone in and taken out Colonel Kurtz, and put Martin Sheen under one arm and Willem Dafoe under the other and rescued them (all riffs on "Apocolypse Now" and "Platoon").
It was very funny, actually, I laughed a lot.

55. Definition.com defines Satire as... |
|
A literary work in which human vice or folly is attacked through irony, derision, or wit.
John Stewart never declared himself a Democrat. He does Satire News that goes after both sides. Granted majority of his time is spent on Bush and Co., but it's because there's much more material to work with there. I've laughed at some Clinton jokes people made before, and I've laughed at some material John did on the Democrats...I really don't see the big deal.

It's supposed to be a comedy show...what did you expect him to do -- a serious review of the convention? He's on the COMEDY channel for crying out loud. Maybe it wasn't funny to you, (it wasn't really THAT funny to me, either) but if you expect him to only make fun of the Republicans and never criticize the Dems, then I guess you don't know much about his show. He makes fun of BOTH, but he's usually harder on the conservatives. Lighten up, and just wait to see what he does during their convention! ;-)

Stewart ain't no Mencken, but he's one of the better attempts in the television age.
Today's political convention is a place where reality is suspended for a week, so that the party can try their best to con the ordinary American into believing that their candidate is a real human being and not some politician.
Okay, so I ain't a Mencken either.
My advice would be to LIGHTEN UP!!!

"Under democracy one party always devotes its chief energies to trying to prove that the other party is unfit to rule - and both commonly succeed, and are right." -- H. L. Mencken
He's saying that there's no difference between Dems and Repubs! I am insulted! I'll never watch his show again!
And if that weren't enough:
"The kind of man who wants the government to adopt and enforce his ideas is always the kind of man whose ideas are idiotic." -- H.L. Mencken
I want the government to adopt my ideas! He just called me an idiot! Fuck him. Next thing you know, the Republicans will be calling me an idiot! FUCK MENCKEN FUCK MENCKEN FUCK MENCKEN.

Stephen Colbert's "report" that the primaries hadn't been very interesting was OK, but then Jon started riffing on the convention speeches, using short-cut quotes to make points. He took fairly cheap shots at all the speakers, ignoring the substance of what they actually said. I think the worst was his treatment of Bill Clinton, where he said Clinton savagely attacked the Republicans for being . . . just like Clinton. That one should get an award for missing the point, as anyone who heard Clinton's speech will agree.
Yeah, sure, he's a comedian, he's paid to be funny, but there are lots of ways to be funny that aren't at our expense. You can bet that Dennis Miller and Rush and a lot of other right-wing comics won't be taking this kind of shots at the speakers at the Republican convention.

Others find that Jib/Jab video internet thing funny, I find it offensive to Kerry.
And I want to point out-in the very beginning of the Daily Show last night, he brought up our major beefs that we've had on DU. The photo-shopping picture of Kerry, and the worthlessness of the media coverage. HE gets it. He's the best friend we have in the media.

If you think they were hard on the Dems just think about how much they are going to nail the PUGS when it is their turn. I'd imagine Jon, more than anybody on the show is pissed about the RNC planning an event on Ground Zero. The PUKES are going to be on Jon's home turf. The are going to get reamed.
And he honestly didn't say anything that didn't need to be said last night.

122. Jon Stewart was poking fun at the repetitiveness.. |
|
of the Dems highlighting Kerry's war record. He was poking fun at how many of the speakers repeated the same things, and went on to say "John Kerry - single handedly rescued Willem Dafoe!" and stuff like that. I didn't really see a problem with it, and I didn't see it as an attack on Kerry's record, more a satirical statement about how it is a central theme (As it should be, IMHO) of this convention. I watched the whole interview and didn't find it particularly insulting. It wasn't one of his funniest moments, but it didn't upset me either.
Or maybe I just hadn't had my morning coffee at that point.
