Message Board threatened by Boston Herald
It seems that quoting a bit of a news item, and linking back with an attribution, isn't enough anymore. The message board was threatened with legal action, & since they don't have deep pockets for a legal defense, they had to cave in.

1. That's the Boston Herald - always defending free speech
and the ideals of democracy.

3. newspapers starting to realize that web boards are a better format?

Maybe the management and owners are starting to realize that web boards are really a better format for getting news. Web boards not only filter and aggregate news from all over the world, but you get great discussion and analysis of the news, the quality and diversity of which cannot be TOUCHED by the newspapers themselves.

Web boards are going to cut revenues for newspapers, TV and radio.

4. The moderator is just being overly cautious. The
Boston Herald didn't do anything.

The Supreme Court has ruled that it's fair use to quote a portion of a text.

6. They've gotten several complaints from major media
News sites are now posting a notice that copying any portion of an article is copyright infringement.

I know that violates fair use, but message boards without deep pockets, can't fight it.
